sE Electronics release new USB microphone and Hand Held Condenser

sE Electronics have added two key new products to their award winning condenser mic range, the H1 (Hand Held Condenser) and the D-01 USB mic.

H1 – the ‘H1’ Hand Held Condenser is based on the sE2a condenser capsule, re-voiced and tuned to accept an SPL of up to 145dB. It is aimed at both the project studio market and the live/touring market. The mic has an rubber, ‘internal shock mount’, which allows it to be hand-held during a performance with very low handling noise, much like a traditional dynamic mic. However, it’s capsule is that of a true condenser, so live performances are much ‘clearer’ than they would be with a dynamic mic.

The H1 is also ideal for recording vocals and instruments in the studio. The mesh head used for live use can be easily removed to reveal the re-voiced sE2a capsule for very ‘open’ and ‘detailed’ instrument recordings. The cardioid capsule of the H1is interchangeable, and 2 further capsules (Hypercardioid and Omni) are expected to be released by summer 2006, further increasing the flexibility of this superb product. The H1 will retail at £149 inc vat and is shipping now.

D-01 USB mic – the D-01 is a USB2 microphone based on the studio standard sE2200a capsule. It records CD quality audio (record path16 bit 48K, output 24 bit 48K) via USB directly to your DAW. The D-01 has several features unique from USB mics currently on the market including, ultra-low latency headphone monitoring (less than 1ms), 10dB pad, Bass cut and an ‘analogue switch’ which enables the user to use the mic via an XLR connector with 48v phantom power where required. This feature adds flexibility of use to the mic, and means that whatever changes may occur to digital recording technology in years to come, the mic can still be used in ‘analogue mode’, unlike it’s competitors.

In addition, the sE D-01has proprietary chips, developed by sE Electronics International, which deal with both noise and software driver problems faced by competitor products. One chip helps with transforming the 5v power supplied via the USB cable to power the capsule, by first removing ‘noise’ and undesirable spikes from the current. This ‘noise’ would normally be amplified, which is why USB mics have, until now, been largely too noisy to use in a professional environment. The second proprietary chip has all the appropriate software drivers embedded for use with any DAW, so the product really is ‘plug in and play’, automatically configuring to the host as it is connected.

The D-01 will ship in early April and will retail at £222 inc vat.
