Need a money pre that looks slutty!

I need a big sounding preamp for vocals (single or stereo) that has a "wow!" look to it. Something that the clients will think sounds better thanks to the looks. But, I do want it to sound good too. It will be mostly male rock vocals.

I don't want anything half rack (sorry, Great River is out). 2 rack spaces is preferred.

I like the Groove Tubes SuPRE, and the Vintech 273 (not super slutty, but I can sneak that 'N' word in there). Chandler Germanium? I don't need EQ or anything like that.

Suggestions anyone?

The Groove Tubes Vipre is even sluttier than the Supre. And don't forget the Shadow Hills Mic Pre.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm after something more slutty looking than the VT, but it's on my list still.

As far as the ViPRE, it IS a bit more slutty, you're right. As to the Gamma, I would love the 8, but the 2 channel looks pretty sweet as well...

Keep 'em coming please!

Sluttier looking than the Fearn? For gosh sakes, it's Slut Red!

How about a Grace or an Inward Connections preamp? Or a Blue Robbie? Maybe a Revolution?

Looks pretty nice to me.

Just how important is the look of this thing going to be?

Actualy.. the Mercenary version of the 737 looks pretty slutty.. and hip hop artists are obsessed... no idea what they sound like.. but I assume better than a normal 737

I agree the Fearn looks slutty.
Maybe the only thing sluttier looking is a Joemeek.
Sure, they're not up there with the best sonically, but they are slutty sounding too.

I think nothing could be sluttier than an API type rack.
Throw in a Purple Audio, Shadow Hills, a bunch of A-Designs (especially the red and blue for that slut look) and Inwards connects 820MP. Yowza!

You could also consider:

These two have the color to be sluts
Pendulum MDP-1
Tubtech MP1A

These have the girth and a few knobs
Manley Voxbox
UA 2-610
Sebatron VMP2000eVU
The SPL Gold Mike MKII is pimpish looking.

I'm impressed that you have clients that even know what a mic preamp is, never mind understand its importance in the vocal chain.

Even if they are influenced by appearance, that is a promising situation. These all look great. Get the one that sounds the best and let the sound influence their opinion of what it looks like.

And what about your opinion of what it sounds like?

Can't believe you think the Fearn doesn't look "slutty enough"!

Well, he did say he wanted it to sound good too. I get where he's coming from, he wants it to sound great but also have a bling factor that impresses his clients. You are lucky in classical that you don't have to worry about things like that (as much).

I've had situations, mostly with producers, where I show them my studio and then they kind of jump to attention and take me more seriously. A bit silly perhaps, but the gear itself sort of makes a statement to some people that you are a professional and can get the job done for them.

Just to be fair to Kennedy the only Great River pre which is 1/2 rack is the ME1. The two chan pre MP2NV is one full space. I don't think they are anywhere near the sluttiest looking, just wanted to mention it since you said in your first post GR is out, where I assumed you thought they were all 1/2 space.

I think GRs are among the sluttiest SOUNDING

But the sluttiest LOOKING has to be Shadow Hills

Although anything with a Merc edition label should get gearheads' blood up shouldn't it?

I would get what sounds best, and if it happens to make people sport wood when they see it, so much the better

I think the Inward Connections stuff is up there with Shadow H.

The gutsy thing to do would be to run 'em through a Behringer but put a high-end pre in the rack and make 'em think it's what they're hearing. When they say it sounds great, you can tell 'em what it is.

I dunno man.

I work on both kinds of music, country & western!*

Not too many of my clients care what preamps or anything I use...

Maybe 70% of the singers ask what microphone they're singing into or will recommened something that they know has worked for them in the past but I'd kind of expect that.

Buying something based soley on looks is pretty 'effin stoopid IMO.

*Tis a Blues Brothers joke for those who don't get it...

I do mostly rock, roots, metal, jam bands, bluegrass, newgrass & other forms of 'organic' music.

The VT-1 is just a little too simple looking. i LOVE the look of the VT-2 and VT-7. The VT-1 is still on my list of considerations, though.

Yes, but this is almost an as yet untouched discussion about mic preamps at gearslutz.com.
