Songs you're embarrased to like.

OK, fess up. Songs you crank up when you're alone in the car. But not yet so unhip that it qualifies as a hipster gag.

Nick Gilder "Hot Child in the City" Can't get over this one. Mostly nostalgia, perhaps. The iTunes version is not original, which is a drag because the original is soncially really cool. Very stripped. Really, I don't know why it's so evil, it just is. Arrrggh! 666!

Ozark Mountain Daredevils "Jackie Blue" This one is actually a good song.

Hanson "MmmBop" Super slick, catchy number. Wouldn't be caught dead groovin' to it.

Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line"

Bob Welch "Sentimental Lady"

Oleander "Why I'm Here" I know, gag me with a maggot. The worst of all the Nirvana clones. But a catchy little number. I can't believe I'm telling you guys this. Man, I must really suck.

Stevie Nicks and Kenny Loggins "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'" Yes, it gets worse than Oleander. Now I suck and I'm a super dork. I swear I have lots of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, Velvet Underground, Nick Cave, Willie Dixon, Dead Kennedys, etc....

There now. I like those songs. I can admit it. And I feel great!

OK, who's next?

Already did it in the other thread: "MacArthur Park"
"For All We Know" The Carpenters
"Tin Man" America
"King Tut" Steve Martin
"Angie Baby" Helen Ready
"Time in a Bottle' and "I Got a Name" Jim Croce

I got some others, too.

And Max, Baker Street is an AWESOME tune and qualifies as one of the top ten sax licks in rock.

Oooo! Oooo! "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister" pure unalduterated POP! I have ALL their records. They just kept getting better. (Sound like a little school girl...) But they're truly great.

Hmm, let's see, "Hit Me, Baby" is an awesome song...I also like Avril's "Complicated," although I'd much rather listen to the Weird Al version...he's a REAL genius. Also, the last 30 seconds or so of System of a Down's "Chop Suey," despite the horrible lyrics, and overall horribleness of the band. Also, any song by Yanni.

"Borderline", "Vogue", "Respect Yourself" and that psychadelic tune from "Austin Powers 2" are great tunes in my book.

I don't really believe in being embarrassed about music, but I admit I still feel a bit strange about liking Lindsay Lohan's "Confessions Of A Broken Heart (Daughter To Father)." Autotune or no Autotune, that bridge going into the final chorus is killer...haha.

Absolutely - Wierd Al for president, I say.

FWIW - I think "Bob" is proof that Wierd Al is a true genius. (For the uninitiated, "Bob" is a song that exlusively uses palindromes for lyrics. In the style of Bob Dylan of course (Bob being a palindrome) - and he really nails the voice and the video.

But I pretty much like everything he does. He is the antidote to taking music far too seriously.

Mandy - Barry Manilow (preferably cranked on an old clock radio in a corner of the room)

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - Osmonds

I'm Gonna Getcha Good - Shania Twain

Anything sung by that Steve Perry guy... you know, like I can sing it too. That God for audio masking.

Yeah, me too. Rafferty's got a nice voice. I think these songs get lumped in the 'overplayed classic rock' bin.

But I do think they're great. That one big slide down the E string in Baker Street always gets me going. It's probably 'hipster' now that Foo Fighters covered it, but their version didn't work out so well, IMO.

I just thought of another one: Kevin Rowland and Dexy's Midnight Runners: "Come on Eileen". A great enough song to be a hit twice. I heard a newer Kevin Rowland single on KCRW in the nineties and it was really nice.

But "Come on Eileen" was really, really different than anything else happening then. And it was a valentine to Johnny Ray.

Oh, and someone's gotta mention "True" by Spandau Ballet. The only time anyone out-Manilowed Manilow. Great stuff.

1) Anything written/produced by Jim Steinman, including the aforementioned "Total Eclipse of the Heart". My favorite of his is Air Supply's "Making Love out of Nothing at All".
2) If you mention Bob Welch, you gotta think "Ebony Eyes".
3) Which reminds me of Jay Ferguson's "Thunder Island".
4) Am I the only one who listens to Abba, or is nobody else embarrassed? I actually used "Chiquitita" when I last shopped for speakers.
5) Neil Diamond's "America".
6) Baltimore's "Tarzan Boy".
7) "S-S-S-Saturday Night", Bay City Rollers.
8) Bertie Higgin's "Key Largo"
9) Sherriff's "When I'm With You"
10) burton cummings
11) Captain and Tennille's "You Never Done It Like That"
12) Carpenters "Only Yesterday"
13) Tokens "Lion Sleeps Tonight"
14) SteelHeart "Never Let You Go"
15) Shawn Cassidy "Da Do Run Run"
16) ONJ "Xanadu".
17) Nina "99 LuftBalloons"
18) Night Ranger "Goodbye"
19) Michael Martin Murphy "WildFire"
20) Lobo "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo"

My car has XM, it stays on the 70's channel (but I'm kind of proud of that).
Can't believe I wrote #15...or 20.
I could really go on forever. Sadly, I'm embarrassed by most of the music I like.

I can't think of that song anymore without thinking of the cheesy karaoke version in The Wedding Singer.

I love Celene Dion's theme from the movie "Titanic." I'm ashamed to write this 'cause I do understand what total crap it is, but I'm a sucker for a corny melody and a tin whistle always tears me up, and whatever you think of her, that woman has an amazing voice...

Artist: IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Song: White Bird
Album: UNKNOWN
They play this tune somtimes when I am at the grocery store.
I dig it!!!
I like to hang in an isle with an overhead speaker for that tune!

White bird,
in a golden cage,
on a winter's day,
in the rain.

White bird,
in a golden cage,
alone.

The leaves blow,
Across the long black road.
To the darkened skies,
in its rage

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
unknown.

White bird must fly
Or she will die

White bird,
dreams of the aspen trees,
with their dying leaves,
turning gold.

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
growing old.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

The sunsets come, the sunsets go.
The clouds roll by,and the earth turns old.
And the young bird's eyes do always glow.

She must fly,
She must fly,
She must fly.

White bird,
In a golden cage,
On a winter's day, in the rain.

White bird,
In a golden cage alone.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

Wow, So I'm not alone in my affection for '70s AM radio pop and rock. How about Jigsaw's "Sky High", Pilot's "Magic", any and all Sweet ("Love Is Like Oxygen" is their tune, btw), and ELO. Love Nick Gilder and Pat Benatar. Benny Mardones' 'Into The Night"...that's a singin' son-of-a-bitch right there.

Okaaay!

Time to close this thread. Weekend****** just dropped the "Love Theme from Titanic" bomb.

I, for one, am a big fan of many of the songs mentioned and maybe worse, but you gotta call some people out. There's no excuse.

Edit: Love Is Like Oxygen!!...great song. Have you heard the extended version? I guess it's the album version, I'm not sure. Little Willy, by the same group, now that's one to keep a secret.

My vote goes for "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks... although that shouldn't really be embarrasing for some reason it is...

oh, and this one is really horrible but I must confess: I actually purchased the video/song for my iPod: "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas. I like this song even though it is probably one of the signs of an impending holocaust.....
