U87 and V76m...worthy (cheaper) substitutes?

I was told by Peter Coleman that the best possible "next purchase" for my project studio would be a U87 and a V76m, and I'm sure he is correct since I am trying to finish a project with a female vocalist.

I can't afford either at the moment, but need to finish the record I am working on. Any ideas on what might suffice, or should I take out a loan and try to find an 87 and a V76m? Thanks!

You should try the soundeluxe u195 instead of the 87.

Cheaper, but still a chunk of change.

Good luck man !!

and even better than the U195 is the Peluso 2247, and then you get a multi pattern mic.

For many vocalists male or female, like myself, a simple SM57 + a quality pre will meet or beat a U87. (have not tried a V76m yet). Same goes for many other dynamics ala RE20, SM7, et al.
