Buying used monitors - What to listen for?

About to go check out a used pro 2.1 system for mixing. Other than running some test tones to make sure everything is alive and kicking, and that there's no audible distortion, what else should I listen for?

Could the monitors pass these tests and still be damaged in some way?

They're coming out of a demo studio, so my guess is they've seen a fair amount of action.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

I alsways bring a cd or mp3player with material on it I am very familiar with how it sounds and like the way the mixes sound over most systems.
I play it back over the system and see how "normal" it sounds.
If you are going to use them for mix decisions and they don't sound right to you...you will make possibly bad mixes with them.

Not much more you can do if they sound good, except 2 things if they are powered monitors.

Rotate the volume pots/tone knobs for any scratching sounds.
Jiggle the TRS and/or XLR jacks for same reason.
