analog tape: 16 tracks 1" vs 1/2" - worth the effort?

Hi.

i've got a 16 track 1/2" tascam msr16 and am thinking about an upgrade to 1".
is it worth it?

Well, obviously there are a lot of variables in terms of what quality machine you are considering, but in general you would notice a big jump in fidelity with more real estate per track. A 16 track 1" is considered "pro-sumer", but people have made some great albums in that format.

2 inch 16...makes a huge difference...so I'm assuming an extra half inch also makes a difference

depends on the cost

you get better snr

every double of width should help snr about 6db more
