DJM 900 gain staging?

I'm trying to understand the gainstaging in a Pioneer mixer called the DJM 900 which i own.
Pic of it here:

There's a DAC inside the mixer. You can hook up the 4 channels via USB to be converted before it hits the DSP.

My problem is:

When i run a test signal (1khz 0dbFS pink noise) from Logic into Channel 1 through USB the LED meter shows up at +7dBu.
Is this normal behaviour? Shouldn't a 0dBFS signal show up way above +7dBu?

I've looked at the block diagram of the mixer signal path and it shows there's no gain added before it gets to the LED Meters in the chain (apart from adding your own gain via trim but i set that to unity) however there is sample rate conversion before going into the DSP.
Ive asked Pioneer and they say that the numbers to the left of the channel LED (-24, 0, +4 etc) meters are dBu so i'm assuming the LED channel meter is measuring in dBu.

Can anyone share any info as to why the test tone shows as +7 on the channel LED meter and not way higher?
