Oberheim SEM Sub Oscillator

I am just between buying a new SEM and old SEM with custom made panel .

With the custom made panel version, there is sub oscillator option is available

So the question is, what actually this sub oscillator doing towards SEM ?
Is it just taking everything 1 more octave down ?
If so, does it mean that SEM can sound more deeper in the low end (bass) ?

Is there a way to add sub osc to the current one ?

You can see the unit i am talking about below which has sub oscillators

i will be very happy if someone explain that .

thanks a lot

It really looks nice and unique. If it is from eBay, I assume it costs 2K$. Ask seller how it works. Some people like old SEM more (thread is somewhere here about that).

Personally, for that money, I would go for 2 SEM with patchpanel and MIDI to CV convertor(s). Or add little more and have two SEM Pro. It's nice to have 2 osc with 2 sub osc, but 4 osc can be detuned more nicely and they will make bigger sound. You will have two LFOs, more envelopes, two 12dB filters and can use two units like Two Voice. Later, if modular is an option, add frequency dividers, patch them and have sub oscillators. I think SEM is nice add to modular system, but I don't have SEM yet .
