I wouldn't say normal practice, though I have seen unbalanced Dsub/DB25 somewhere. I just spent the weekend rewiring 6 redco patchbays, all of which are DB25 connections on the rear. They use the "TASCAM/digidesign" pinout which most audio manufactures also use. You can see it here...

Not sure if you would just leave out the neg and wire the pos and ground to achieve unbalanced or if the whole pinout would change. Your friend google should be able to help!
