M160 and M260 on snare, safe distance?

3", 6", 9" or 1'?

and can they be mounted upside down?--there's supposedly a problem with having them anything other than horizontal, with the dots aligned vertically.

Never used one on snare, but they're pretty robust -- the 260 was designed as a stage vocal mic I think. The concern about orientation is that if you leave ribbon mics in the 'wrong' position for a very long time, the ribbon can sag. Not a problem for the course of one session. And in any case the ribbons Beyer use are very short and less sag-prone than most.
