does an expenive monitor controller really makes a big difference?

i never had the chance of listening to some serious monitor controllers like monitor st and avocet, only used central station, big knob, level pilot (it died after a half a year) and now i have a m-patch 2. i don't need multiple inputs. 2.1, 5.1, digital in, talkback, only volume control. is the dangerous monitor st really 1700$ better than the cheap passive ones? i don't really understand how impedance change alters the sound. only think i notice is the imaging problems at really low volume but i don't really monitor at that volumes anyway.

Well made monitor controllers don't make a big difference, which is often why they're expensive. Steps and repeatability are also quite important to some people, and good components that make this possible aren't normally cheap. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg though
