Hey man it could be a simple repair. Best bet is to send it to Jim Williams at audioupgrades.com or a similarly professional technician (don't send it back to Ross - it will take too long). Even with repair cost you have something of pretty high value. It could even be a loose wire you could see yourself and solder (his stuff's easy to open up).

gabasa, I sent you a PM! Ross is working alright. I think he gets like 15 emails each day yelling at him, me included. I'll have 6 completely different items of his by the end of this and know it's worth the wait from the 3 that I have.

Studio's gonna look like a custom spaceship. Some may say bare bones, but his gear looks totally bad-ass.

This is like Ron Ellis pickups. Forget that you paid and work with other gear until it shows up and it'll be like Paul McCartney put out a surprise album that was recorded during the Ram sessions and never shown to anyone before.

Or this kickstarter - 2 years later - finally due in a month or two.

https://vimeo.com/79827225

Love the wait, or we'd be paying Burl prices.

I just got Ross's PCM 4222 earlier this week....using it with Avid's Omni and Protools HD 10. We're still trying different outputs of the PCM 4222. Right off the bat...the Ross Martin converter sounds warmer, deeper, more analog ...and seemingly less "sterile" than the Avid Omni. Not sure why...or if we're hooking it all up the best way yet. I've 8 channels of great pres which I want to have the best combinations of inputs....the PCM 4222 and the Omni together is giving me a choice of hooking up my Chandler TG-2 pre to either the Omni or converting through the PCM4222. They both sound different with the TG-2...as do my API 3124s and my TL Audio pres... All sound great through either converters. The PCM 4222 has different choices in outputs....AES, SPDIF COAX and Optical Outs where as the Omni only has one input so my tech buddy and I are still trying the configs out and how to have max input choices with the best tones. As far as any complaints on getting the product on time delivered to you...Take a deep breath and remember you're dealing a guy who cares about his products and makes them out of his garage. His wife usually answers the phone but I was always able to get Ross on the phone and talk to him...he would always answer my questions no matter how dumb they were. Try getting Avid to do that. No complaints here on any level with what I'm hearing...what I'm getting. I'm in the middle of a learning curve with the new hardware and new HD 10 Protools software but, I'm real happy with what we're getting here. And it's cool buying from the guy making your clock/converter and know later on...if you've a problem, he's there to answer your questions and help repair it. Great price as well.

Reading this thread is a real bummer. I've put off getting a Ross Martin for a few years now and having just had my higher end adda stolen (long story) was about to email him to place an order but then i decided to check here first and coincidentally...well I guess I'm waiting till things clear up. Hopefully they clear up.

I use my RMA ADC and DAC everyday and am very glad to have them. I am sure there are a lot more guys who are in the same boat but just don't post about it. Yes, it took a LONG time to get. But the day I got it I was glad I waited. I know it is hard specially if you are in need but, good things come to those who wait.

Since then I have been beta testing a few other new ADC's and DAC's (not on the market yet). I also started gathering sound files of a loop test of one song. I have a number of really great options in the test right now and getting more. So far the RMA is on top!

That's nice to hear. I think that better times are ahead for Ross. His new two channnel DAC is out, (at the bottom of his product page), and his new 8x8 boards are done, with AES interface.

The one unit I've been waiting for is his 8x8 with USB. I spoke to Ross recently and it seems like it's not too far from being on the market (ie., months, and not years). At his price points, they'll be quite nice, I think. I can't think of any 8-channel PCM4222/PCM1794A converters on the market at any price point. Pretty exciting.

Hi Dan, are you testing mid tier or high end converters, or a mixture? Interested to find out more about your test and also your thoughts/impressions.

I have a Lavry DA10 but... shipping from Australia to the States would be costly and time consuming.

I got my 1794 DAC a couple weeks ago. Like I said in my other post I had been waiting since last August. Could not believe it actually came. I set it up, plugged it into my Mac optical out. Played some wavs, some old PT projects (off my 003 rack spdif out), even some mp3s. Very pleased, so far.

I read about your beta testing and I'm certainly intrigued. Its a toss up I guess. Either way it looks like I'm waiting. Also I'm certain theres many people who have had only great things to say about their RMA. It's just a shame there's so many bad experiences.

Ross

Hi, i'm pretty excited, I think I may be the first guy who'll be receiving the RMA AD/DA 8x8's and his 8xDAC's? I've had some input on the design to a small degree(per Jim Williams), Ross was going with the THAT line drivers, and i wanted the AD4898 op amps used instead, the units are 2 channels per chip operation, and individual power supply's per card, I'm pulling 4 boxes, 16 AD's and 32 DA's, via a pair Lynx AES16e's feeding my console, they are basically Superbeasts with double instead of single channel operation on the AD4898 op amps and 1794's, that takes the DR from an amazing 132db to a lousy 129db on the DA side Then i'll be feeding a Pcm4222 with the stereo buss off my console, and finally monitoring off the Superbeast2 DA.

As far as Ross's woe's, he's is a great designer, he's had some overwhelming issues with business and health, but he's working through them, the addition of a wave soldering table is going to take the soldering process down to around 9 minutes per Superbeast2, I'm hoping he can pull himself out of this, he's a really nice person, as is his wife, I believe they will eventually take care of everyone, if you have the patience, his stuff is really, really great sounding IMO

Hey guys I'm back so after all the stuff I went through with the waiting and the having to return units and what not I ended up talking to Ross on the phone and he actually offered me a free superbeast plus my refund because he said he felt horrible about my situation we spoke for a while and I was less pissed after he explained everything to me he got extremely backed up on service work because certain parts were failing from a certain batch I told him I didn't want the money so I'm just getting a super beast and he gave me a great deal on a 4222 so I ordered that unit also so its looking good if ross was some huge company I'd probably take the money and the unit but I couldn't see myself taking advantage of a small time guy like that.plus I searched high and low and Couldn't find anything in the price range of what Ross was offering

That is great to hear. Most businesses go out of buisness ironically because they are too successful and have trouble growing. Hard lesson to learn but I hope he has since it sounds like a great product and always rooting for the little guy!

I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while, and one thing keeps coming to mind as I read:

Why isn't anybody buying this company?

It's obvious that Ross is struggling with the business side (not saying that hurtfully btw) and has some personal/medical issues, and this is the income stream to deal with it. Why doesn't someone pay him out (but keep him on as a consultant for R&D - less responsibility, more time to deal with family, ect..), consolidate the product catalog, place the designs in a proper and super attractive case/faceplate, and grow the brand? Sucks to see a great idea in the hands of someone who's taken it as far as they can, and not have the ability to take it where it has the potential to be. He needs help to take the next step up.

If he's able to do what he can now by making units by himself, imagine what could be done with a small/modest staff of 5-10 people? Have a product manager/marketing specialist, tech-support, few guys dealing with supply chain, and the rest in manufacturing. If the product sounds as good as everyone says they do, and his name is synonymous with quality, half the work is already done. Just needs a little capital, a few passionate minds that know the industry, and you could have the next Universal Audio on your hands ...

The whole point of his products is that they're super cheap but also of excellent quality. To give them a makeover and put them under the wing of a larger company will necessarily drive up the price, meaning they'll be expensive and high quality, just like all the other good converters.

Currently, the tradeoff is time... good/cheap/fast--pick two!

I get what you're saying ... but if that were the case, companies like Warm audio wouldn't exist.

There's a way to maintain core values, yet modernize and grow the business. Just takes the right minds to make it happen. Things like excellent customer service, technical support, and other "touch points" from the customer's point of view cost money. But they also breed confidence, organic growth, and repeat business.

There's also the issue of product positioning. The product needs to exude quality from the first point of contact, right through to the end result. Taking a look at Ross's website, and finished product ... well, leaves a ton to be desired. As a business owner you need to realize the areas in which you are holding yourself back. If he needs orders, and is barely making ends meet with the current model, he unfortunately only has himself to blame. This is common among business owners who try to do it all themselves.

I hope the best for him and all, but unless someone grabs that company by the balls and runs with it, it's only a matter of time before someone else does it better.

...I just grabbed a pre-owned RMA 1794 DAC (with usb and headphone amp) on eBay...hooked it via SPDIF, and the improvement in both my monitors and headphones is quite noticeable...tighter bass response and improved clarity and depth...I'm very pleased with the upgrade...now I'm even more anxious to get my RMA 4222 ADC...

I suspect he may be pushing the new mk2 boards which seem to be a more reliable design.

The mk1 opamp mountings are unreliable, especially when using the AD opamps, they heat up considerably.

Can anybody tell me, does Ross email a tracking# when he finally ships, or do you just find the unit in your maibox without any notice?...

I wouldn't expect it, and would inquire for sure.

Also, for anyone interested, I'm going to be putting up his 4-channel A/D unit up for sale as I haven't used it but once.
