What the heck is ""Spline curve automation??""

Zynewave Podium [DAW software] apparently has "Spline curve automation" as a feature, but even the search engines don't like the term. What the heck IS it?
Thank you.

guessing
it is a combo

automation appplied to computing a series of points using the spline method

spline is a way to interpolate more accurately by using multiple existing points on each side of where the new data is to be created. using a curve instead of a straight line would be more accurate if the curve is smooth.

consider a sample from sinx
worst case samples at 0 60 120 180 240 300 degrees
sample data 0 .866 .866 0 -.866 -.866
straight line interpolation would give you a middle point at the peak of .866
we know the correct value is 1

a spline might give you a value that is closer to 1 and thus more usable as an upsampled value

automation would do the math for all the points if you were upsampling to get a more accurate superset of samples

You need pictures! See below....

If you were asked to "connect the dots" in the image below (with straight lines only) imagine how different is might be. Spline functions make wrap around curvy approaches to smooth things out even when the data point only imply a curve. I think they do so by looking ahead at succeeding points and picking a good average path.

Does that help?
