Mackie 8-Bus Expander Issues

I've got a 24|8 and a 24 channel expander. I have exactly the problem described here with an added twist:

Hum Noise - Due To Expander? - Mackie Forums

Basically, when the expander cable is not connected, the board is perfectly quiet. When it *is* connected, it emits a hum. I can correct this hum by connecting a cable with metal loops on each end to the bottom of each mixer attached to its screws. It removes the hum, but there is still a slight amount of hum left. But the most vexing issue is that in addition to the slight hum there is a constant crackling. The crackling leads me to believe that the issue is more than just a ground loop thing, but I really don't know.

Anyone know what that might be?

Thanks.

I had a Mackie and when a similar problem arose I opened the bottom and reseated all of the ribbon cables.

Also, (this sounds crazy) I took a 1/4 TRS and plugged/unplugged every single jack on the board.

After this my problems went away. Either way, it is worth a look at the innards. Nothing real complicated, just PCB and ribbon cables.
