Noob Question?

What gain/level settings should I be using going into my DAW? I am using Pro Tools 9 and obviously paying attention to the fader meter. Should I stay mid green? top of green? slighty in yellow? a lot in yellow?

Thanks for any help!

Keep the levels peaking at -12dB at maximum during tracking (lower green). It seems low but it avoids a series of future problems. You will be able to compress and gain after, if the mix sounds too low. There are a couple of threads here explaining gain staging. If you make this a habit your mixing process will be faster. It also depends on the number of tracks you have but in a rock mix with 15/24 tracks that's a good starting point.

agree with baslotto. Some even say staying at -18dBs is best..
