Advice for low level monitoring

Can anyone offer some advice on what i'm best doing so I can improve monitoring at low levels on my set up?

I'm currently using Genelec 8030a's but at low volume I find them quite lacking on the low end, and it's only when I turn then up loud i'm comfortable with what i'm hearing. However, this isn't usually an option due to neighbours so most the time i'm stuck doing everything in my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's, which always isn't ideal either.

My friend has Rokit KRK7's and I find them better for monitoring at low levels, due to them having 7" drivers over the Genelec's 5" I would think.

Would adding a sub help?

I think that front/rear porting is another factor to consider.
