Too much gain with an mBox2?

OK, so what gives? I can't mic up my kick drum without clipping on an mBox 2.

The signal chain is SM58-XLR-mBox 2 padded, gain at minimum.
Mic placement is about 2 inches from the resonant head, as I have done many times before at the studio I used to engineer at. Also, it isn't air blast from the kick drum port. I have also tried my Audix D6 with the same result.

I know this Tama Rockstar kick drum isn't THAT loud...

OK....so I had to restart my computer a couple times (and also unplugged the mBox) for an unrelated issue and now it is what I would call normal. Pretty weird if you ask me.
Now I'm rocking two 57s un-padded with the gain halfway up.
Really weird.
