Need HW Compressor for Bass

Here is the situation

I have a hybrid type set up with a ghost 32 LE, the following comps on group inserts:

Group 1- Vox (Main Vox on channel insert, Distressor EL8-X)
Group 2 - Bass (plugs)
Group 3&4 - BG Vox - (plugs)
Group 5&6 - Guitars/Keys - RNC
Group 7&8 - Drums - RNLA

Master Buss - ART PRO VLA (original, stock tubes)

As you can see, not Hi-end.. But it works for me...

I would love to use the distessor for the bass while mixing but leaves a void for the VOX.. I don't mind using plugs for the less critical tracks but perfer to use HW comps as much as I can...

So, I am looking to pick up a FMR PBC6A to use on bass or vox and move the distressor for Bass....

Sound like a good plan??

I know there are other products out there I am overlooking... Another VLA perhaps...

I appreciate any recommendations on this.

Thanks,

Not necessarily.. I don't like the RNC or RNLA for bass... But I heard/read the PBC6a is a totally different animal......

What about one of the DBX 160 models on bass? You might find one second hand for a good price. They are good on bass. I haven't used any of the FMR compressors so I can't comment on them, but they do seem very popular on GS. I wouldn't use a VLA for a bass compressor personally, but they are good on the master, as you now have, as long as you keep the ratio low and the threshold relatively high.

Yes. No threshold control. 100% of signal is always compressed to some degree.

I've got an RNC, and it's pretty much unused recently. Much prefer the DBX 160A generally on a variety of sources, although the RNC super nice mode has it's uses.

After more research it looks like the the 160A is great on bass...

The PBC6-a might be more versatile.. but if it just as good on bass I will go with the FMR PBC6a.....

Anyone else with experience with both units want to chime in??
