The new Hives album

Has anyone heard "Veni Vidi Vicious" yet? Musicaly I'm finding it a breath of fresh air. Pretty damn raw but refined in their approach. Anyway, I'm sort of on the border about the engineering. While it's totally perfect for the band and the songs it's very interesting in a good way, just the choices of tones and mixing. It says it was recorded at Studio Kuling and Pelles Studio which I'm assuming are in Switerland which is where the band is from. Anyone ever been to those studios or know anything about them?

Aren't they from Sweden.. the single - "main offender' sounds great on the radio & TV..

There is a massive US A&R bidding war going on for them right now..

Haven't heard the album yet...

Youg kids go see them here in the UK..

Cool!

I don't know about the bidding war thing. They're on Burning Heart / Epitaph. At least that's what my album says on the back.

That album was produced/engineerd by mr Pelle Gunnerfeldt here in Sweden, He's has built quite a reputation for himself here. As everything hes involved in turns out really really good. He's in a band called Fireside, think they did tour the states a few years ago, Rick Rubin got them signed to some label overthere. He has his own studio (still unnamed), but as far as i know its pretty unconventional, a lot of brickwalls and stuff,..not your typical slick studio. I think Steve Albini is a big influence on him.

well,.,i could go on and on

Please do! It's pretty obvious that the tracks hit tape which I'm a big fan of. I'm also an Albini fan. So brick walls you say huh? I dig unconventional. okk

Anyway, Jules - Go grab a copy. It's 4 chord rock at it's best.

Cool link. What kind of gear does he have in there? Or is it a general mystery and you have to book time there to find out?

I have been to that studio, in february this year. Funky place, looks like it still is under construction.

Another Swedish studio that has used bricks in one of their tracking rooms, RommarΓΆ Studio. A beatiful place, not exactly low budget... :
Top class place!

And regarding that other studio where the Hives recorded, Studio Kuling. It is another great funky place, lots of good stuff has been recorded there over the years.

That Hives record in my opinion is one of the best sounding and produced record sI have heard in a while all the performances are amasing the band is pushing and pulling the beat in all the right places and all the drums are spot on. They played WFMU where I work and were on fire. Totally great band. As well bidding war has been over the album is actually already out on I berlieve sire in conjunction with burning heart and epitaph. Gotta love that the majors are now doing the smart thing and throwing away idiot A&R men and just letting the indies do their scouting for em. I also thinkt he Hives vocal distortion is much much cooler then the Strokes one everyone loves. If you love this stuff though check out Bad Wizard(Tee Pee Records) and The Cherry Valence(Estrus) they are probably the 2 best rock bands doing this thing.

The Strokes was done on 1 x 888 to begin with, then later they upgraded to 2.

Here for the gear

The Hives

I was told last month by a clerk in a record store that Warner Bros. picked up the disc in the States. If it isn't out yet on Warner, it will be soon.

If you want a better band (open for debate) with similar production sound check out Randy. They are on epitaph in the States and Burning Heart in Europe.
