Analog...sort of?

I know many pros track ITB and mix on a nice desk. I've been becoming much more familiar with analog technology at school. We've been learning on Tascam 424s (hey, gotta start somewhere!).

So I'm wondering, is analog sort of an all or nothing thing? It's no secret those tape machines are pretty ****ty. Is there decent low end analog stuff?
