$10,000 to spend on console

Hey all.
I just got a new space and am going to try to make an old dream a reality.
I'm looking for a console with character and that will hold it's value.
Ideally, I want 24 or 32 channels but could work with 16.
Any suggestions or leads would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Who did the work (recapping) on that board? Was it Martin Arthurs? That looks sweet.

You'll have to ask our resident AMEK freaks, Slipperman and Kenny (the 'overproduced drum' guy) for their $.02 I'm sure there are others here, as well.

heres the link to the Orion.

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/showthrea...ighlight=D%26R

For some reason I`m really hoping Pounce can sell the that thing without resorting to Ebay.

A lot of it is just the fact that I bought a far less decked out Orion (and non X to boot) for a price within throwing distance of that.

If I see him going down much further in price I`m probably going to lose it.

There's a D&R Orion for sale from a GS member (pounce - I think)

I tell you this - get that desk - great sonics and still in production so no problems with spare parts or support. It doesn't run too hot so maintenance isn't much of a problem. EQ and Pres are very fine and the routing is flexible. Get it.

I love D&R consoles, I own one myself, but they do not really fit the bill for a console with "character", they are quite clean and neutral. But they sound great and would be seriously worh checking out. I have other ways to add more dramatic color.

If you really want something with character, some of the Ameks could fit the bill.

A 32 channel console with character that will hold its value for $10K?

Sorry but I think you will keep dreaming for a while.

I mean basically we are speaking of Neve,API, or Trident.

Everything else with "character" won't hold its value in the same way.

I mean you can look for a Harrison console or some kind of Amek.

But the values change depending on the value to the seller.

Everything else in this range is more in the "cleaner" category.

I'd call Blevins and possibly Vintage King to see what they might have. For $10K, you can get a really decent LF board.

ouch sorry I didn't read the color stuff up there - D&R's aren't colored IMO.

But I prefer clean desks anyway

The word that comes to mind is neutral.

Neutral can be a good or bad thing depending on what the tracks sound like.

If you have to create or give already tracked material a "sound" then D&R consoles wouldn't be my first choice.

But if you already have tracks that have a sound to them than they are a fine choice for mixing purposes.

I SO wanted that 2520 just posted.

Call me old fashion but I made some great recordings on a 2500 and I would love to have one of those in a studio.

I mean really love to...

There is nothing wrong with it if it fits your style.

Problem is when you are mixing other people's tracks that have the "digital"character you need some kind of color on the console to give it a sound right off the bat.

Its part of the reason i like mixing on SSL's because the character is somewhere in between depending on how hard you push it.

It can do the neutral thing if you know how to avoid the SSL "sonic pitfalls".

Or it can do the crunchy thing if you need more of the SSL "mash sound".

Its the same thing you are seeing in some of the choices of summing solutions around here.

At first you saw a lot of people gravitating towards the Dangerous products because of their neutrality.

Now after a few go arounds you are starting to see people lean more to the summing solutions with color(N16 or Chandler comes to mind).

i have an orion in the for sale section, price lowered, that would fit these specs.

when i was looking for it, neotek and d&r were main candidates since i wanted a cleaner more uncolored console. i have outboard tube gear to "dirty up" whatever i want to have colored. just my preference. harrison, trident, mci were others i was considering in the colored console variety. my budget was from 7 to 12 thousand and i ended up spending just under 10 thousand on mine (bought it shortloaded a little cheaper, but had to add channels) there were a few consoles i thought long and hard about. size, weight, maintenance, parts availability, etc. were some issues i considered. good luck with your search, and again, mine is listed in the for sale area if you are interested.

Digital or analog?

If its digital then you might consider the Mackie X-Buss which we just bought for use as a live recording mix console. I love the sound we're getting on the remotes and the total recall is a godsend of course. Haven't really tried the automation or the mic pres (which I hear are actually quite good), but its the neatest little digital console I've ever used what with the dual 15" touchscreens and all. No need to relearn everything.

Up to 72 inputs depending on the cards you install and of course it will also work as a DAW controller.

And it weighs next to nothing....... Its a bit more than $10k list, but I bet you could make a great deal.

No real suggestions for an all analog desk in that price range..... Good luck

I'm in bad shape financially, at the moment.
But, my studio is functioning, so I still want to get a console.
It could happen in the next few weeks, if I'm lucky.
Thanks again.

joppy ,
some valuable and helpful replies above..
Let me throw my 2 cents in on the D&R line; I am currently working on an Avalon with Optifile VCA automation. I find the board clean with decent amount of headroom and fairly neutral sounding. More importantly..considering it's age there are very little maintenance issues with it. The occasional dead bulbs, a couple of intermittent switches and that's all.
I have some decent rack gear to patch in as "character".
However, I have worked on a few different boards before, where the work flow was disturbed by fairly constant breakdowns of components.
One MCI 636 and an Amek Angela. Although they had a definite sonic footprint, if that is your goal.
All above consoles should fall into your 10K budget these days.

BTW, this is my very first post on GS
I totally dig the diversity, knowledge and the usually fun attitude here..

I've been thinking about replacing the Roland VM7200 mixer in my midi room with a digital X-Bus. All 94 inputs are used for Gigastudio, Logic Pro, tons of synths. As far as I can tell it would cost around $20,000 to outfit the X-Bus with this many inputs from the usual dealers. How much did you pay for yours and where did you buy it?

Thanks,

Jef

That's the key. Patch in rack gear for character. Get an inexpensive yet transparent desk, and spend some bread on colourful mic pres, eqs, compressors or whatever.

If your working in a DAW you dont really need a big desk anyhow.

With that said, you can impess your clients with the sluttyest looking console in your price range if you find a SOUNDCRAFT 3200. The ANGELA might sound a bit better though. Perhaps a TRIDENT 65. I never used one. In fact the only TRIDENT I ever worked on was at the old TIKI recording studio on Long Island, I think it was a TSM. Oh yes, and the Manhattan Recording Co. in NYC had a 80b or something.

I have a D&R Orion for sale. 32x8x32 with an additional 16 stereo ins. With patchbay, all harnesses and automation. I need to get rid of it quick as I'm in a cash pinch. Let me know if anybody has any good ideas (other than ebay!).
