Sidechain - popmusic - the kick

So, use a sidechain to make the kick cut through in popmusic, is that common? I know it's normal in house.

Whatever it takes to sound good. So yes and no.
Picking up the right one is the key IMHO.

I do it all the time if the bass gets crowded... No matter what genre. Of course, there are exceptions.

I never use it. This is my take...

If you must use sidechain compression to hear the kick, (or the bass) then the bass and kick are probably EQ'ed too similarly and competing for the same frequencies.

Here for the gear

I'd agree with RawDepth. It's more of an effect rather than if the bass and kick are smothering each other.

I used it occasionally in the past, but now I use it all the time. Just find the right settings so that it's completely transparent (we're talking about light compression) and you're golden.

True, kick & bass should be recorded and eq'd in order not to fight with each other, but sidechaining the bass makes things easier nonetheless.
