Neve 1073 UAD vs. Liquid mix

Hi again,

I prepared another shootout. This time emulation of Neve 1073 EQ.

Settings: Boost @ 1.6 kHz

Carefully matched by VST plugin analyzer and by ears

UAD #1
LIQUID MIX #2

This is easy and people sleep on the Liquid Mix but I know that sound from anywhere, in #2 I can here more dynamics of the clip. Thats the Liquid Mix without a doubt.

I wish there was another poll option for 'Not enough difference for me to really lose sleep over'!

Still a worthwhile exercise even if that is the outcome, thankyou for your efforts.

Hmmm...ok i probably couldn't tell you which one was which, cause i haven't used either...but i prefer #2...dunno why...it just suited the track a bit more, i felt like #1 was ever so slightly harsh on the top end...and this track seems like it needed a little bit of warmth, which #2 had a little bit more of.

If i were to guess, i'd probably say #2 is the UAD, mainly because it has that "smooth" sort of quality i get with the UAD plugs i use (although i haven't used the neve 1073 plug yet).

I'd probably be happy with either though...

These tests - when you embed the mp3 and make it playable on the web page, you are guaranteeing that your "users" will be listening through computer speakers or computer headphones. I appreciate the effort and wanting to share but in a case where two things are as close as this (and your other one), I need a WAV file so that I can load it into my DAW - or else I get frustrated. Some tests are fine for MP3 but the two you've uploaded are so similar that I can't hear any difference in MP3 format. I want to though - I love playing with things like this - but I just can't.

The similarity has nothing to do with mp3 format. Mp3s are encoded on 320, so this is as close as possible to wav. If you cant hear it here, you cant hear it in wav I think. I didnt boost frequencies above 10 kHz, so frequencies are there....

Ogg format works better than mp3.
You can use flac too if wav are too big.

OK, LM Neve 1073 emulation is really comparable to UAD, so results:

01 LM
02 UAD

No idea which was which on first listen, but I liked the punchier, more articulated low end in 02 (and voted as such)

Do you have the clean version?
What is the boost applied?

No touch in low end, so how can you like punchier low end.

Only boost @ 1.6 kHz

So this is typical for "UAD GUI" users.....

again they both are very, very close, but overall I think again the UAD sounds more natural with the boost. Both really nice though.
