New Audio Interface, Need Help

I just got my first audio interface today. I got the Lexicon Alfa for like 70 bucks. It's amazing how much louder the signal comes through now (like twice as loud compared to my macbook's line in). It'll do 24 bit/48 khz which is lower resolution than my macbook but I guess that's ok for now. Now for my question, when I have my slim phatty hooked into it and I turn the input vol on the audio interface to about half way (and volume full on the sp) the signal comes through into my daw at like the max volume you can get without clipping (which is nice). However, if I turn the sp's volume to halfway, and the interface's input volume to anything over half (or max volume), I get this high pitched noise which is very audible and annoying. Is this normal?
