If you where only allowed to own 3 microphones

If you had to choose 3 microphones to use the rest of your life. One ribbon, dynamic and condenser microphone. Which one would you choose? Please choose microphones you have used before. Microphones you trust and love.

Here's my list:

1) Condenser: AKG 414B-ULS
2) Ribbon: Beyerdynamic M160
3) Dynamic: Sennheiser MD421

Happy New Year!

If you where only allowed to own 3 microphones

Condenser: Sennheiser MKH 800 (or 800 TWIN)

Ribbon: Coles 4038

Dynamic: MD 421

NB: I have assumed 3 PAIRS as 3 individual mics, one of each, would be totally useless. If it was only 3 individual then it would have to be a pair of the MKH 800 plus the MD 421.

condensor: Schoeps CMC-6 with omni, card and fig 8 capsule (most versatile)
ribbon: Coles 4038 (also for versatility reasons)
dynamic coil: Shure SM57 but without transfo or EV RE20 (hard decision, both also for versatility reasons)

If I was allowed to own 3 microphones, I would know that the government had won at totally controlling my life. We're getting close to that, you know.

Let's see.... my TLM-170, RCA77dx and Norelco D-24.

If you where only allowed to own 3 microphones

U47, SM57, 4038.

You can use the U47 vocals, drums, rules on kick drum, piano. You can use the 4038 as a mono OH, room mic, acoustic gtr, amps. SM57 on the amps and snare and other close micing.

U47... 4038... Beyer M88 although the Soundstar Mrk 11 would be considered as well.

If it's three single mics rather than pairs:

AKG 414EB (1970's w/C12 capsule)
Cascade Fathead II (Lundhal xfrmer)
Cascade Fathead II (same xfrmer and the Blumlein bar)

Can I squeeze by with the second ribbon being called a dynamic! heh ... don't tell me they're not. So if you kick out one of my Cascades, then I'd have to throw in the SM57.

No need to mention the versatility of the 414 with the C-12 (vocals, solo instruments, etc) but for the other two mics I'd need a pair of something matched, so I could do overheads, stereo this and that, Blumlien etc. The Fathead II does the SM57 thing on guitar amps, only better, and would just give me another flavor on solo instruments other than the 414EB. Wish I could say I've used a Coles, or Royer, but I haven't. I don't feel the Cascades get their just reward especially for mid/side.

If you can cheat and have stereo mics I probably have a Coles 4050 and a AKG C24 over the 4038 and U47 for versatility.

I would probably still go to an NBC sound stage and grab the first 3 mics I see.

That was going to be my three as well, with maybe my Crowley & Tripp over my bk5. That bk5 with the attatched windscreen is one of the coolest looking mics ever and sounds sooooo good.

Nice thread. It's a bit tricky just 3 when you consider all the applications you may need them for.

For me it would be:
SM-57 (great snappy dynamic)
U-87 (best all round condenser ever made imho)
4038 (smooth mid range, sure there must be better now though. I'm still looking)
