Best pcie soundcard to hook up AD/DA converters via SPDIF? Audio Interfaces

Best pcie soundcard to hook up AD/DA converters via SPDIF?

Hey,

I'm looking to get rid of my M-Audio firewire solo and just use a pcie or pci soundcard to hook up my AD/DA hardware via SPDIF. Which Pci or Pcie soundcard would provide me with the best latency? Should I opt for something else than a Pcie soundcard?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Chris,

What converter are you using (the AD/DA you are wanting to hook-up)?

Mytek Ad and Mytek DA, separate boxes. Running both with spdif right now but I wonder if I could get better latency.

If latency is the issue and if you want to offer yourself a place to grow, I'd consider the LYNX AES16 card and do a connection via AES/EBU as opposed to S/PDIF. However, that will set you back several bills. I'd check out the RME HDSP 9632 card should do the trick while offering excellent thru put.

sorry to hijack the thread, but...

I too am looking to replace my profire lightbridge with a pcie card

I have a mytek 8 x 192 with adat card

Looks like the only option is the RME raydat? Anything else out there?

Would want it sync'd to the mytek's wordclock out

Not the only option, but actually the first one that comes to mind heh It's a great card, amazing drivers, performance, etc. As to the sync frankly, it will take it's word sync from the ADAT cables so you're okay there assuming that's the only digital connection being made.

bumping this thread, looking for a PCIe soundcard with SPDIF in/out, have an external Mytek AD and DA in my monitors.

If I'm only using SPDIF I/O and never plan on using the converters does it really matter what I use? There is an EMU 0404 card for $120 and several of the Soundblaster cards have SPDIF for less than that.

In other words, what would a more expensive card like the RME give me, if I'm ONLY using the SPDIF in and out?

thanks!

It won't matter at that point, as it will all be digital. RME may give you better drivers? Not sure, I've never used it. Just need to make sure that the sampling frequencies are as high on the card as they are on the AD/DA converters.

great thanks. I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure....I think I'm going with this one then, I record at 24/88.2 so it should be ok right?

E-MU Systems - E-MU 0404 PCIe - PCIe Digital Audio System

It's replacing an M-Audio Audiophile192 which was also inexpensive so should be about the same quality I'd guess....but M-Audio is sticking their head in the sand over PCIe, no support at all!

Also, any benefits to using optical vs coaxial I/O with SPDIF?

thanks!!
