michael jackson/prince style synths?

alright i have a few questions,
alright, well im starting on a "in home" recording studio from skratch., i have no equiptment what so ever,
i make music simular to michael jackson's and prince's style.
what are some good synths, i have been researching and have found the minimoog, prophet 5,oberheim four voice, oberheim OBX, the poloy moog, and a few more.. but i dont know much about synthesizers, i just want to make good funky music
please help,
also.. i have another question, alright well in a few michael jackson songs there are some cool vocal things (done by machine) that i would like to learn how to do (what equiptment to by) here is something that im talking about,
here is a link
YouTube - Michael jackson - Best Of Joy "Preview"
im talking about that parts that sounds like he is harmonizing with his own voice,
also, that ohhhhhh ahhhhhhh sound vibe in the back ground,
(also how would one make a soft relaxing beat like in that song? is that synthesizer? or what?)
please help,

some suggestions.

Oberheim OB-Xa
and a Roland D50 with PG1000 programmer should cover a lot of the prince sounds.

also a yamaha SY99 is a powerful all rounder.

maybe a CRUMAR BIT ONE could handle some of the Oberheim type sounds.

if you want plug-ins then memorymoon stuff might be ok for moogs
sonicprojects OPX for an Oberheim
native instruments FM8 for an FM yamaha
nothing for a D50 though

The OP-X nails the OB-X sound.

Uh, no. I have an original OB-X. The softsynth doesn't "nail" it.

There are comparisions on YT, you can hear the difference.

Well, ok, yeah, I concede that "nails" is perhaps an overly enthusiastic description. But it is close, and I don't think that in a recording anyone will tell you the OP-X sounds fake.

Cool thread, I'm also interested in Prince/MJ record synths.

That would be him layering harmonies by singing them. I'm pretty sure that's what he did by the sounds of it.... if not him, then someone else is singing the backgrounds.
