Tape Machine as Tape Delay -- a Strange Thing Happens

Hi,

I was experimenting with using a Tape Machine as a Stereo Tape Delay. I'd send a stereo signal to the Tape Machine, then return it to a stereo channel on the Mixer, which in turn was sent again (so as to create a Feedback Loop).

I definitely got the distinctive Tape Echo sound, but one thing I noticed was that the echo always seemed to be on either one side or the other, not in both the Left and Right channels. (The side itself will change from time to time.)

First I thought something was wrong with the tape machine, then I thought something was wrong with the cables -- but after exhaustive testing everything was fine.

Then, I tried the same thing with a stereo Digital Delay set with Feedback at minimum, so that only one repeat would come back. I hooked it up in just the same way as the Tape Machine was, and the exact same thing happened: the echo trail would only be audible on one side.

Attached is a picture of the mixer (Urei 1620) and the tape machine (Otari MX-50) for no reason at all.

Thanks for any thoughts,
rs
