As great as that song is I'm going to go with "Rehab" as I think it has more universal appeal being up tempo and all.

Toxic. Even the biggest Britney (or pop in general) haters I know quietly admitted really liking it.

This thread sparks me on some I've forgotten about....

But aside from my already stated Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks...

I Agree with:

Toxic- Britany Spears
Crazy - Gnarles Barkley
Rehab - Amy Winehouse
and Seven Nation Army - White Stripes

did anyone mention Last Night - The Strokes? Or Hey Ya - Outkast?

I only skimmed this thread...

Aphex Twin something off of Drukqs
Bjork something off of Vespertine
Ulrich Schnauss something off of Goodbye
Interpol something off Turn on the bright lights
Radio Dept. something of off Pet Grief
Queens of the stone age something off Songs for the Deaf

but those are the records that made me go wow this decade.

Would be impossible for a single song to define an entire 10 year period.

Forgot about this one

Since you've Been gone (kelly Clarkson). Everyone Liked that song, I don't care who you are. Well, maybe not everybody but pretty close.

"Forget You" is the name of the clean version.

Yeah, that's definitely up there.

And her being a product of TV talent-show is pretty relevant for the decade as whole as well. Whether we like it or not.

But for the 00's? What do you think?
I don't think this decade really had a 'song', but does any decade? it's all preference

I like MJ but I would hardly say any thing he did can represent the whole decade from everyone's point of view. If you are a Metallica fan or a GnR fan or a Van Halen fan, MJ does not represent you and 80s music.

In this last decade I can't think of one standout band or artist. Atleast not on the same level as the typical 60s70s80s90s artists when there were literally hundreds if not thousands of spectacular songs that defined any given moment in those times from Elvis to the Beatles to Sabbath to James brown to Soundgarden or Dre or whatever,

there was nothing in the last 10 years on that level... not even close

Probably either:

1. Beyonce-"Crazy In Love"

or

2. Beyonce- "The Single ladies(Put a ring on it)"

Probably the songs that were longest in rotation when they were out.

This is so subjective, but in the pop genre I would add "Unwritten" by Natashia Bedingfield and maybe "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles.

Interesting. On the contrary, I think the 2000's was one of the better decades musically, or at least as good as any other. Maybe what I really mean is, I liked it

I have to give my love to Sigur Ros' Hoppipolla. It may not win in a popularity contest against Usher or Christina Aguilera, but there's something about that song that just does it for me every time.
Also, it was used in so many movie trailers that millions of people have heard it without even realizing it!
It's the background song of the decade.

I don't have particular feelings about this song, but I'll say that "Waving Flag" by K'aan is the song of the decade simply because it heavily represents the development of the third world. This has been their decade more then for any other and this song very much echos this.

Well for an old school 70's party rocker, I have to say the most refreshing
song of the last decade was Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl.

I'm gonna give it to Coldplay for "Clocks." That's the only timeless song I can think of. It's also a huge crossover hit that everyone liked both young and old. It also captured the damaged goods sadness that was the last decade of terrorism and financial ruin. It just has this feeling of wanting things to go back to the way they were which is a sentiment not person on the planet doesn't feel after the last 10 years.

Some of the other songs mentioned are great, but were only hits to young people or just girls etc... Song of the year needs to hit everyone and something like black eyed peas, gaga, or even radio head fails to connect with a well balanced audience.

There were many brilliant songs. Hard to say...

Cry me a river - Timberlake
Your'e Beautiful - James Blunt
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon
Unfaithful - Rihanna

"Hey Ya" was, by definition, the song of the decade...
Total cross-over hit, and just a total 'feel good' song.
Little kids loved it, politicians used it at events, and it was a dance-floor sensation.... (And the verse even had a Kurt Cobain feel...)

What other song had a span like that? "Crazy"? Bahh!

This song, tho, was my personal fave:

The bigger the party, the stupider the songs. So let's trash the party standard so as to focus in on songwriting and musicality. Imagine you and your 3 *best* friends listening to the songs in a symphonic hall setting, hearing every note and every detail. Is the song a work of art or is it a primal, thumping, dumbed-down fart ? ----- YouTube - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? ----- YouTube - U2 - Stuck in a moment -----
