Can anyone explain the phenomenon of the stereo phantom center?

It has been tripping me out.

Phase i'm sure that link will tell you a lot, but yeh, part of it has to do with the fact that say something panned centre, the same level is coming out of both speakers at the same time, the sides will phase cancel, and the middle will phase add...so you get this phantom centre heh

The other part is the human ear, which as the wikipedia reference describes i think, we have 2 ears, and when we hear the exact same thing from two sources at the exact same time...we perceive it coming from the one source...but in this case the one source would be the average between the two sources...i.e. the centre...interesting stuff
