I'd love to know more about this album. Mixing and tracking wise.

The album just sounds perfectly beautiful. Just perfect.

That would be nice.
Or he could even post here himself about the tracking and mixing in the album, or anything he'd like to share.

i thought they did lots of the vox at her place - she has a vintage Trident console and a lovely U47 which she fancies!....but that is just what i have heard...probably bollocks!

i know on the last Portishead record they chiefly used a Rode NTK on Beth's vox....suited the bill apparently...

i would love to hear the facts too.......Beth/Portishead are def heros of mine! - ground-breakers and bench-mark-setters for me sonically-speaking!

Phill got back to me on the question
here is what the man himself said

Album recorded at Konk and Westside studios.
Some vocals at studio with Neumann 67 through a Urei1176.
However,,,, most vocals done at Beth’s house with a Shure 57 through Neve mic amp..

Thank you.
I'll go ahead and put out some questions that pop in my head though.
Main compressors?
Main reverb?
Main Eqs?
Was tape used for both tracking and mixing? It certainly has a tape signature all over it.
Any certain production/recording tricks?

Again, what an amazing album.. Sonically and musically..

Beth Gibbons & Ristin Man

This has been my #1 favorite album for a good while now. I can leave it on repeat for days.

As far as the vocals, usually you want the vocals brighter to cut through but this album often has the vocal darker than the accompaniment, which I love. Another album that is very similar in this regard that I recommend to those who are into this kind of thing is Beth Orton's "Comfort of Strangers." Also another British Beth, coincidentally.

Thanks for the info given so far!

Bump!

ha! yes...another great 'Beth'....i heard she only ever does one 'keeper' take once she feels warmed up.....and i believe it: a bit pitchy sometimes but such a cool feel she has!

Great record. The Talk Talk gents are unmistakably good on this. As is she.
