Abbey road console and operation

I have read recording the beatles and I know that geoff had his fairchild patched in on 2 channels permanently.

When he used them did he just send stuff to it for a little flavor in parallel or did he just send what he wanted down that channel so it would be on that insert?

i have not read the book, and am also interested about this.

i have the impression (though i have nothing to really back this up) that pretty much everything hit those channels with "normal'd" fairchild's on the way in.. seems like those things were like the village bicycle on those sessions, i can see in my head those meters kickin' back about 10db on every-damn thing that went through them.
