Here for the gear

Starting a gear collection

I want to start a bit of a gear collection and just wondering if its a good investment.

Im thinking a few high end all time classics
LA2A
1176
possibly a neve preamp and EQ

Should i go vintage rather than new for best investment?

Any recommendations, think this is a good idea?

Im also after some new monitors, what do you think about ns-10's, there so popular but i've heard very mixed reviews.

The devices you mentioned are most likely to maintain their value in the future. However, they are also the most copied devices in existence, so it's unlikely their value will rise tremendously because of the limited availability of their signature sound.

A separate question to ask yourself is, why are you building this collection? If you are aiming to achieve something that has historical value (as in museum of vintage recording gear), it's going to take a lot more than that before it interests anyone but your closest geeky friends. All of the pieces you mentioned can still be found on most higher end recording / mixing facilities around the world and in use daily. Rather than museum pieces they are usually seen as reliable workhorses who, despite their age, still deliver their "thing" reliably in a daily production environment.

As a personal source of joy and happiness, I'd say whatever works for you. I'm building a home studio for myself purely as a hobby, and my goal is to achieve a functional production environment with as high a quality I can afford. For me, getting something like an Alesis HD24XR, Art Pro VLA or a DIY 1176 is a source of tremendous joy, as it gets me yet another step closer to my personal goal. To achieve my goals I have decided I don't "fall in love" with any of it, but rather take the path of continuous upgrade in order to be able to improve the whole setup with budgets I have available for this (shoestring at best). Just a hobby, but one I invest all the extra time and money I happen to have.

Anyway, I'd say go for it!

My 2c.

Collecting and investing are not the same, and can be mutually exclusive.
Collections themselves are almost never financially lucrative.
Is vintage audio gear a good financial investment?
No.
If you want to buy beautiful things that sit around and collect dust, get into art. The risk is the same, but the potential rewards in art are vastly greater.

If you want to make music, base your gear purchases on getting the best you can afford with your budget. Long term value should be a factor too, but not the factor. I wouldn't buy any piece of vintage gear unless I was going to actually use it.

I'm sure someone will chime in now to say; 'But my bro Joe bought five UBK500 consoles for a song in 70', and just sold them for a fortune!'
Sure, that kinda thing happens. Just don't expect to replicate that success, and don't buy gear simply because you think it will go up in value.
