EQ's you don't like ???

With all the killer EQ's that so many of us like, I'm curious as to, What hardware EQ's don't you like, or have never liked, and why? ~klauth.

Early 90's I bought an Alesis MEQ-230

At the time I didn't know anything about the design side, but in my crude analysis I found all the frequencies were the fundamentals of G, E and B.

I sold it to someone who still likes it for live sound correction.

I know its heresy around here to say this but for me it would have to be the API EQ's(550,550A,550b,560,554) and the GML 8200 EQ. I've tried and tried over the years, going back and forth with API EQ's to see if i really am missing something but they just don't do it for me.

And with the 8200 its funny because i really love the sound of the Sontecs. Its a wish of mine to some day own a 432 mastering EQ. But with the 8200 its a total miss. Its the one EQ(along with the API's) that i've sold and have never missed.

Rane makes the best written owner's manuals I've seen. And the worst sounding analog gear I've heard.

I once heard a sucessful engineer say that SSL eq's are in no way musical and using them is like walking on shards of glass!

He loves SSL dynamics and automation though.......

Have you ever read a vintage Collins manual? I believe it is the 26U-2 tube limiter manual that I'm thinking of. AMAZING document that covers not only setup, operation, and troubleshooting but also theory. It breaks down the circuit into sections and describes how each works. The parts list gives part numbers and physical descriptions of the parts (C1: Capacitor, electrolytic - 20mfd @ 450vdc, Mallory 79X85, 2" long x 0.5" diameter). Seems almost military in it's thoroughness but it's really a geek's delight to read!

Back on topic - Almost any graphic EQ.

The GML uses an IC for the last stage. Not sure why they made something that is so good feature wise, discrete throughout until the output, then do that to the output.

I have an acquaintance that did the same mod to his GML EQ that I did to my TL Audio PA-1's and C-1's; bypassed the output IC and put in a discrete op amp.

george is by no means a dummy but he isn't infallible ..when i said that his GML automation should have a copy AND mute invert function [back in the day with limited track capacity you might have a shaker in the verse and a tamb in the hook and have to split it out in the mix.. a "copy track and mute invert" applied after the mutes were done on the first track woulda been cool and saved time mixing.. he said "just wire a few channels mute buttons backwards and use them for your splits"..errrrrrr only problem?... when you did a solo in place they didn't mute

a little thought and a few lines of code on his part woulda solved the issue with no wiring involved

I'm really not too keen on the Neve 1073. Low band can sound cool on acoustic guitars, but the mids and highs sort of piss me off. I know, I'm a weirdo.
