Ribbon mics are sensitive Things. Tom spl may brake the ribbon.i don't know about AEA mics, will they hold? I own an El Diablo which works even for BD, with great results. Recorded the best stoneslike Guitar with it today!
Not sure if i would expose an AEA to Toms. Let alone the Drummer who may hit the mic. You know drummers,...the people that hang out with musicians....

Bi directional mics (ribbons) are susceptible to proximity effect.

I imagine with a figure 8 pattern you would pick up a lot of cymbals from above..

Cymbal bleed is no problem with a fig 8 if you know how to use your mics.
I use my R84s for toms, huge sounds, try it...

i've gotten some great tom sounds from using a ribbon as overhead, obviously sorting the cymbals as well heh

you can also get a nice round, silky sort of ribbon effect by using 012's with the pad. Just an idea.

How did you put it ? Do you have any pics?
Im just waiting my r88 that is already on the way...

Yes the figure 8 is probably a problem for micing toms.
Maybe 4 pc of KU4 would work? $$$

Those seems perfect for micing toms but they are also a figure 8 mics

R-122s are beautiful for OH and I don’t see why they wouldn’t sound sexy on toms as well.

We tried M160 on toms. Nice sound! Way better than sm57.
The spill was also more pleasant.

Point it more horizontal, then you´ll have a null at the sides (ride) and up (crashes, if you´re a cymbal loving guy). Never liked pointing it right down, too much harmonics and no punch.
When bleed is a problem, learn to play. For me, the mics with the worst sounding bleed have been 421s, e604s and 57s. Beyer m201, though being a hypercardiod, has a suprisingly good sounding bleed.
With R84s, you can use them as a kind of mix between tom and cymbal mics, low OHs if you like, they have a huge low end even at a distance...

Ribbons have proximity effect. Why would you expect none?

No experience with ribbons on toms, but CAD M179 condensers are fantastic tom mics. Unbeatable at that price. They are medium diaphragm and pick up a huge bottom and silky punchy attack, and need little or no eq. They have a continuously variable polar pattern so you can sweep around and find the sweet spot. It's amazing how little bleed can be had with these, if that is what's needed.

for bleedless toms, i go to the EV N/D 468

as far as positioning fig-8 mics... it's pretty simple.. point the null sides at the thing you don't want to capture... and the front&back to what you want recorded.. that simple... think about it... my gripe about using it on toms would be having the thing get hit by a stick.. and in that case it would probably destroy the mic.. so i would use cheaper ribbons for that .... most of the times i use them as overheads, bass drum or room mic, because they are not likely to get hit by a stick there..

Not a good idea. Stick with condensers.
