Connecting Outboard Gear / Bass Amp As DI?

Okay, here's the deal.

I've never used outboard gear until recently and have begun tracking with a little compression only. Well, I don't know how to get a already recorded track to run through a compressor or other piece of outboard gear, then back in to the computer. Newbie question for sure, but I didn't see it covered anywhere else.

Also, could I use my bass amp as a DI for my bass? I have an amp with an effects send and was thinking if that could be used as a direct box. It says that it's post-tone-shaping, so I should get the tone of the amp, right?

Thanks slutz!
