Korg MR1000 xlrs are noisy..why?

Got a question for any korg 1000 users...I recently got a korg mr1000 for mixdown from my soundcraft board. I am really bummed because the xlrs seem to be very noisy, and distorted overloaded when I try to record into the unit. I have tried both the low and high input switch on the back and have adjusted the input gains repeatedly. The only way I can get the xlrs to work is to set the input switch to low, and then lower the fader on my mixer way down. The bass disappears in the mix when I do this though, because the boards headroom isnt being "used" so to speak. The line inputs are a little better, but I want to use the xlrs....am I doing something wrong? I was all excited about mixing to dsd, but now I'm just bummed..
