Using Saturators, Distortion, Harmonic enhancers

Hey all.
Im a student engineer so excuses on my possibly obvious question.

Im curious as to when to use saturators, harmonic distortion and distortion in a mix. I understand that they all increase the overtones of sounds, but im wondering as to the more specific differences and more importantly useful techniques to use them in a mix. Furthermore, if there are any great plug-ins or outboard gear that are standards or great workhorses for these uses im all ears.thumbsup

Hi!
You're not getting much response to this question.
I'll give it a go.
Times when I have used distortion:

During a mix when voices need to be more "hairy" and for the old megaphone effect, which seems to never die.
Giving balls to a snare drum.. or any drum, for that matter.
Adding extra edge and growl to basses.
Dirtying up digital keyboards. Especially anything that is trying to be an organ or rhodes.
Errrr... what else?
Sometimes i'll clip the mixdown AD (HEDD).

Typical FX used: Sherman Filterbank, Sansamp, Guitar pedals (Boss DS-1, Marshall Guvnor), Guitar amps, overloading mixer channels.
Plug ins: Generic clippers, bit reducers, virtual amps.
Even some digital FX sound cool when overdriven (Lexicon, Zoom, etc)
Some comps can sound quite dirty, thus providing attitude (Check out "dirtiest compressor" thread on this site)
Most of these FX will be applied as an addition to the clean sound.
Ahhh.. I think the reason that no one answered is because this topic is ENORMOUS.

Let's hope so!
Still.. this kind of communication is probably good practice for me.
Preparing for when my small son turns into a teenager.
