Bypassing 828 preamps

I have an old MK1, and I've read on here that you can't bypass the analog section of th 828. I'm just trying to understand what that means exactly.

If I have another preamp I want to use, and I plug it into the line level inputs, how exactly should I have it set so that I am doing as close as possible to straight through? Do all my gain on preamp and set the 828 at full throttle? halfway?

Is this a serious detriment, or nothing to worry about?
