Questions bout' processing vocals.

After playing and touring 5 years with my band I finally got into this recording/mixing thing last year. And so far I'm really enjoying it!
In today's music. . . the vocals seems to have basically no dynamic just to compete with drums, walls of distorted guitars etc. It sounds heavily compressed but still not over the top.

when I try to achive this myself the vocals just sounds wrong.

so how do you guys do?

- edit the vocals before mixing? (fades, gain plugin???)
- mix the vocals til' it sounds great then ride the faders(automation)?

sorry for the dumb questions. hey it's my first post so try to be nice.

For my own style that is the most important step....followed by a little compression relative to what the song calls for.

Very common problem and the best approach is to process the instruments not just the vocals. I find that a haas effect on the wall of guitars helps the vocals and guitars co-exist in the mix. Drums will take some experimenting, but compression and a good room sound (live room or digital reverb) is your friend.
