still using it

I still use it.
I like it better tha Waves for multi band comp. - better clarity, Waves make the signal smaller.

My master chain now is:

DMXR100 dig. out - > PSX100SE DA - > Avalon 747 - > A.Smart C2 - >PSX100SE AD
- > Finalizer 96k with Radiance gen., and multiband comp., soft clip AND NO LIMITER!
- > Waves L2 hardware.

The Radiance generator thing is still useful.
The EQ - is not. I'll get a hardware one soon..
I found that the limiter stage in the T.C. is worthless - getting an L2 hardware fixed it.

After PAINFUL tweaking.. I got it how to setup those bands and get the results I'm after. I't tricky - everything interacts with everything. You gotta think clearly of the things you tweak, and watch it's side effetcs.

still in the mix

since 1998.
I think you guys have heard the finalizer on a lot more mixes than you think.
Not including myself, I know of at least 25 albums that it was used during the mixes. And they've all done pretty well.
IMHO

there have been thoose around in studios i've worked in...

acctually - it might be one of the worst sounding machines ever built to enhance your sound. way to harsh...

I got one (plus 96k) this year because it was on the wishlist of a guy who mixed a record at my place.
that guy mixed tons of serious selling records using this thing.

We kept it on the masterfader since those days
the chain is:

AC2- Avalon747-massenburg EQ plug- finalizer

we dont use the EQ and limiter on that thing, DRG is on, softclip sometimes, multiband comp allways.

I still use a Finalizer Express. I mix on a console so I can't use plug ins on the 2bus.

I (test)drive it sometimes hard so that I can see how the mix is going to sound after being compressed and limited hard in the in the mastering process.
After having checked that I reduce the input gain so that it only compresses the bass + perhaps 1 db in the mids. This is already a nice diference in loudness, but does not destroy anything. Sounds great.

I guess "worse" depends on the source material... Mine's not harsh enough sometimes, so maybe yours is...

I record big, light-classical concerts with about 70 mics on-stage and about 20 ambient mics. All of this together has the tendency to sound a little whoolie (is that the correct way to call it?, for Dutch people; "wollig"). To make a classical orchestra wich sounds too polite for TV really cut and edgy I use the multiband compressor and the digital radiance generator of the finalizer.

Indeed, this does bring harshness to the sound and is (very) far from being pure, but that's just what the doctor calls for. It gives focus to the sound and "glues" it together. It's almost like there's some nice form of distortion on stereobus. Not like a 1176 or a distressor though, but nice nonetheless. Maybe it's imperfection makes it nice. Yes, I guess nice digital distortion is possible after all.

I use a Finalizer 48k still has it value . You can use it as Efx module too or a Expander. Software today can do everything a Finalizer can but to have 1 unit rack with Blocks and that sound is still very nice .

Here I am using a Drawmer 1968ME Compressor on the master with the Finalizer on the Sidechains. Jamming then with it can be a very cool thing!

It sounds to me like the new Foo fighters 'something from nothing' is mastered with a TC finalizer.

Left the Finalizer awhile back >>> for the DEQ2496 --does everything the same for my ears ( also about $150 used ) :: just a simpler menu ...We chain through to a pair of SPECK EQ -- to our final 2 track.

We've got a Finalizer 96k in the "DFA" rack in the corner of the studio. This thread made me think about dusting it off. How could I incorporate it into a DAW / Allen and Heath GSR24 set up? Analogue insert on the mix bus? Or this there a clever digital way to patch it?

If you're using your A&H for summing, there's no clever way to go digital. And because of the latency (aka "lookahead") there's no practical way to use it anywhere besides the mix bus. But hey, it's a multiband you can put in your analog chain, the conversion sounds pretty good for 1993, and right now it's just sitting there. Why not?

I have a Finalizer Express I'm using for conversion and wondering how the good the converters are? Any opinions?

I've owned the TC Finalizer 96k since 99. Never used the presets. I just lightly added a bit of hi frequency and a bit of low end , never too much. Never really used the limiter but I do use the multiband comp, barely 1db of reduction on the highs, 1db on the mids and 2-3 db on the lows depending on the soarce. I like how it controls the lows without loosing its power. It adds a bit if excitement and brings things forward. I never go past 2 on the DRG setting if I ever use it. I use to use it as an AD/DA when I had a Motu 1224 because it sounded better then the Motu but though the TC,s DA sounded warmer, more dynamic and crispier, it was kind of 2D sounding. I currently use the Apogee symphony IO which is a huge step up of coarse.

I dusted the TC off 2 years ago when a hip hop production team asked me to mix their project so I thought , why not try it again. They were competing in a U.S. East Coast competition. I was amazed to find out they won the whole East Coast competition and were now competing with the West Coast. I was shocked when I heard this and stopped over looking the TC 96K. When ever I use the TC , I just use the digital IO. It's a tool available to me now if needed.
