oh yeah, i mentioned him in a thread a week or so ago, saying i liked his sound more than van Gelder's, as well.

the guy captured some of the most incredibly real sounding recordings i have ever heard. over the years i have had some original vinyls of some of his work.. just amazing!

too bad he never recorded Miles (that i know of)

I guess you got call him revolutionary!!!

The panning on "Way Out West" is just sick!!!

I also own "most" of the original vinyl and have NEVER heard anything as "real" sounding EVER!!!

Now the whole tube LDC without a preamp, only using passive attenuators has got me thinking that may well be the key to the whole thing. Would love to hear if anyone around here has done it.

Ain't music great.

I normally do it with a 47/C12/Schoeps 221 through a Langevin 4:1 mixer straight to a mono Ampex 300 (plus a little Emt 140)

one of the best i ever heard was called 'Swingin' Party at Contemporary' by Barney Kessel. stunning sound, and incredible playing.

"Smack up" is a another great Contemporary session.
