Laney Lionheart. Nobody will agree with me but I could care less...either the 5w combo or the 20w head, both can handle literally everything from gorgeous cleans to full-on metal distortion (yes, a Class A 20w EL84 amp doing metal, who would have thought?).

I've been through so many amps, and the Lionheart will always be my desert-island amp. Hey, doesn't cost an arm and a leg either!

Something with a couple channels and some versatility.

Diezel VH4 or Hughes & Kettner Triamp come to mind, though they're expensive. My Marshall 6100 is pretty diverse as well (why I have it).

But in favor of simplicity, plenty of great albums have been done with nothing more than an AC30.

Fuchs TDS.

Nice clean, fits well in the mix.
Beautiful distortion at low volume.
Does blues well.
Handles Strats and Les Paul's equally well.

depends on genre.

Diezel VH4 covers a pretty wide spectrum

Same with VHT Sig:X

But I love me the Engl Invader

so any one of those three?

I could easily do it with only my blues junior also, but I do think the mesa would be more fun

I know this is all subjective, but I find it funny that so many engineers (not everybody, but a lot) that are so picky about outboard/recording gear/etc kind of have generic taste in guitars and amps. I am not talking specifically about this post per say, and I am of course not talking about everybody, but it is just something I have noticed on here before a lot.

souldeep, Ron Vogel, you guys got some sweet stuff.

I just don't get dudes that put all this time, money, emotion and research into mic pres (or whatever), claim to have these amazing ears, then cop out and just buy some generic "Guitar Center" guitar rig that sounds like amp farm anyway.

On the flip side, I think a lot of engineers that are drummers tend to have decent/better taste in drum gear.

Back to the subject. I have made albums using one amp for all my guitars...

Matchless dc/30 (1993 original model)
1971 Pro Reverb
1976 Princeton Reverb
50 Watt Marshall (early 70's) and cab w/greenbacks

It's also a weird thing now that I think of it...

New guitars and amps - most all of them are not up the the same level of quality of the vintage models of the past. Pedals are better now, but that's it. You can get raped and buy a new custom shop and it might be 60 percent as good as a nice vintage model. New amps are kind of in the middle between pedals and guitars. Still overpriced as well by a long shot.

BUT...

There is a TON af amazing studio gear coming out all the time. PBC6a, API 527, ma5, e27, Royer 121, etc etc etc.....

The studio gear makers are kicking ass, selling stuff for reasonable prices - you get great gear.

Vox

I agree with the above poster a nice valve driven VOX. I like the chime of it. Either that or a Marshall stack ...

Just one? Well, my main one here is a Mesa DC-10, but I also have a Valve Junior and a Fender Super Champ. I VERY rarely use anything other than the Mesa. Switchable power between 60w/100w. The 2 main channels are switchable with the footswitch, but channel one's gain knob pulls out for a little more gain there giving it more of a blues vibe. Preamp section uses 6 tubes so it's really smooth. It's also got that classic Mesa Boogie graphic EQ. I love it. Tons of balls and still lots of finesse as well...btw, takes to a ProCo Rat phenominally well. Got the Foo Fighters sound without even trying with this thing.

This is a generic choice because the stipulation of the thread is to choose 1 amp for all duties, so I'd go with a Hiwatt 100. You can get a giant crystalline clean tone with some pretty break-up up top, you can run the geetar through a Germanium pre if you needed to scuzz it up in interesting ways, or you could drop a bigmuff in front for more scuzz, still.

Alternatively, I'd go with something like an old Fender Super Reverb for similar reasons. Nice glassy clean, shimmery overdrive (out Voxed a Vox on September Gurls, for example), and full-on Ted Nugent gonzo at high-gain. Again, extra tone can come in from outboard with careful gain-staging or pedals.
