How To Make A Hit Song....

Add one tune that is full of hooks.
A rhythm section that can really swing.
A vocal group that is excited about the tune.

Instant hit......

Listen to this one.
The rhythm section blows me away.
They are so tight.
Cellos? Especially bowing in an R&B tune?
Drummer is the star IMHO.

This tune absolutely rocks IMHO.

(P.S this is a weird version, the released version is better)

Nothing I hear today even comes close to the talent these guys have.

And SURPRISE! They are actually playing real instruments!!

cool, but I have to disagree completely with your recipe for a "hit song", seeing as how most "hit songs" these days rarely include all the ingredients you listed.

How to make a hit song?

These days there are three factors:

1. Be a beautiful, young, sexy girl
2. Use Auto Tune
3. Have lots of money so that you can promote yourself.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have much to do with talent anymore.

If you are a girl, kiss another girl infront of a camera
If you are a man, dress as a woman, and call yourself Lady GA GA

End of story

Hit Record guaranteed

I think, being beautiful does help. But if you are attractive and can sing good you have an advantage over so many. Now, if you are decent looking and have loads of talent, an incredible singer, even play a guitar really really good. Get ahold of a famous producer, you "might" just have a hit somewhere. Anyone highly marketable is what 'they' look at. You are an object/product to the banks (label).

How to make a hit, I think 99% of the time it comes down to a really good producer to start with and the PR to back it up. There are so many factors involved though. Sometimes gimmick/ridiculous songs become hits too.

-In order to write a hit song, just try as hard as you can to cater to lowest common denominator. Usually sex (or PG 13 twilight romance if you're feeling sappy) does it.
-Have no sense of good taste whatsoever; this only gets in the way.
-Write the simplest melody possible. Think of cheese cake. All niceness, no substance.
-Repeat any parts, all parts, as much as possible, but have a small break at 3/4 of the song, to come back to the same parts again.
-Find what's "cool" about any particular subculture and water it down so both 13 year old girls and 50 year old housewives can buy your tickets.
-Have one or two lines that sound deep. They don't need to be, they just need to sound it. Put that in your chorus. Better still, make that your entire chorus.
-Master at -3dB RMS.

Edna Wright, the lead singer here of Honey Cone, has a terrific voice-just like her 'sis Darlene Love. Both were quite attractive too!

Ohhhhh man noooo, thats too complicated, as i said:

If you are a girl, kiss another girl infront of a camera
If you are a dude, dress yourself as a girl, and call yourself Lady GA GA or "Something" GA GA. Make sure to hide your penis thou...

Let me add that if you are into EMO all you have to do is dress up, well like an EMO and call your band anything that starts with "When" , "As" or "My", and then fill it in with any nonsense you can imagine.

Example: "When the rain hits the pavement", "When crows sing", "As i lay crying", "As the vultures fly in August", "My daddy died", "My underground doll", you get the picture its easy, try it for yourself.

-Take one 14-25 year old actress
-Dress her up as slutty as possible
-Write a standard I-IV-V progression using mostly major chords
-Add roughly 50 tracks of VI's using various non-tweaked presets
-Find some apple loops that either have the 4-on-the-floor, or the disco beat
-Add some double time shaken percussion loops in the chorus
-If it's a "rock song" then add some distorted power chords in the chorus and full chords being picked out with a clean tone in the brige and possibly the intro using your favorite amp sim plugin
-Create a drop-out and kill the rythem section roughly 2 beats before the chorus hits
-Add roughly 50 tracks for vocals
-Autotune and Vocalign everything
-Add the 'radio effect' on the lead vocals during the bridge
-Find 4-5 guys in their mid 20s with lots of tattoos and 'messy hair' to pretend to play the instruments
-Record and mix everything in your own private studio
-Use the entire 'budget' for the song/record on promotion

I guess I'm not the only old fart that is bitter about the sorry state of pop music! The thing no one mentioned is the Disney factor. Over 10 years ago when my daughter was a tween (she's 24 now) I commented on Disney being a purveyor of teeny-porn. I feel strongly that Disney played into the sexualization of pre-adolescent girls.

Manufactured pop stars.

Then again what did my parents' generation think of the pop stars of the 60s?
The Beatles, etc etc?

Now, you almost did qualify yourself as a useless old fart like most other guys in this miserable thread -- but then you ruined it all in your last paragraph.

Why did you have to do that?

pop bashing

I use to feel the same way about popular music until recently. Simple melody, repetitive structure, hot bitch singing, and there you have it. It's not so simple though. The more I listen and analyze pop music the more I become impressed. You have to look at complexity from another perspective. Its not about key changes, complex melodies and weird time signatures. Its about combing notes/chords to pull out emotion. It's truly an underrated art.

Take the song "Toxic" by Britney Spears. Really sit down and listen to the low volume harmonies, bass grove, guitar tones/effects, kick tone and a bunch of other things. There is much complexity in pop music, its just a different type of complexity.

Music cannot be defined as "good" or "bad". Sure certain notes go with certian chords blah blah blah. Think about it like this: Blue is defined as blue because most of the population agrees. So in respect, should "good" music be defined by how many people agree with agree that its good?

I personally hate going to clubs, if I have to go I usually sit alone and drink. I usually look at how people respond to different beats. I've noticed, the more prominent the Kick and Snare are, the more response is shown in the crowd. This ties back into simplicity. Also the more familiar a tune is the more response there is. Not because more people like that song but because people don't like hearing foreign music. Its easier to grove to something your know. I think this one of the reasons why the industry regurgitates so much of the same crap. It's safe, and especially in this market its record labels are not financially stable to make risky investments. With music there are always different perspectives of looking at it.

Sorry I know when off topic a bit I just had to go off on a rant.

As stated above, keep in mind hits these days are bought just as much as they are written. The artist, image, connections, video, marketing, etc. seem to be just as important if not more important than the music itself.

Also at least personally, I could probably not write a hit tweeny pop song because I don't frankly understand the appeal. Never have. When I was that age I was listening to alt rock and grunge. Stuff like New Kids, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber has always just made me scratch my head.

Agreed. No matter how hard you polish a turd , it'll still stink like a turd. Fundamentally you have to have a decent song to start with... no matter how you choose to present it.

Writing music to appeal to the masses is definitely an art form. It's less about being watered down and more about being concise. Certainly there of those of us who don't consider themselves part of "the masses" so your negative viewpoint on the subject is simply a reflection of your ignorance of our current mass culture.

Because writing hit songs doesn't make one rich. Selling them and having them played can make you rich, but not writing them. A song in hit format doesn't sell itself.

It's this "format" way of thinking that is keeping you from selling millions of copies. Their is no "format" that makes a song a hit - yeah sure there are certain arrangements and structures that work for a certain aesthetic but what makes a true hit song is somewhat esoteric.
