What did you do that made your year? New gear, great records, etc.

Me?.....
Installation of the bathroom, ductles quiet air conditioning, DAW setup

Working with Amanda from the Dresden Dolls had to be my best part of the year.

How about you?

Went to Baja, Mexico and rode part of the Baja 1000 race course on a Kawasaki KLX 400 Dirt Bike. 180 miles a day for 3 days in a row. All off-road. Got lost in the desert - found my way back - after that, I can handle anything.

Another great year for the studio, made payroll every month, bought some new gear- doesn't get better!

Happy New Year to all Slutz!

Recorded a record that got a band a record deal (and the're using everything I recorded)

Moved out of an apartment to a nice house with hard wood floors.. Verry happy..

DIDN'T buy a bunch of recording equipment and focussed more on my craft ( I know.. I know.. this IS gearslutz..)

Played some great bigger type gigs with the band..

I'm sure there's a few things I've left out, but 2005 has been a nice year.

Ha! Love the holy kitty.

That's awesome.

My highlight has been getting an OSA rack, filling it up with cool stuff and doing some "real" recordings of my band.

This stuff is fun! And annoying!

Here for the gear

i wrote and recorded the proverbial solo record-- i played and sang everything except drums and recorded it all on my own-- a major step for me b/c i have always produced but never have been the strongest engineer. also moved the studio to a commercial space and have been working with alot of new clients. can't wait for 2006!

Two of the best songs I have ever heard, decided to use me to be written. I don't feel like I wrote them, cause they're way too good for me. But yes, my name appears after "written by:" Sure I wrote others, but those two are why I do this.

I also made some great gear purchases, that will ensure a positive 2006!!

crazy year for me...aside from the day-job stuff:
- did location audio for the Rollergirls show about to air in A&E (recorded the bouts)
- multi-tracked Hank Williams 3 at the ****tiest craphole in Austin (my opinion)
- recorded/mixed a few songs for my pal Sara Hickman
- mixed a TV series for our local PBS station
- mixed a few short films and 1 feature doc
- mixed a record that i started 3 years ago for Erik Hokkannen
- did some more location recording around town(boom 'n lav stuff)
- did sound design for short animation
- got my '71 BMW 'cycle worked-over and rode it a bunch
- went to AES and met some new friends, saw some old ones
- buried my 15+ year old kitty (r.i.p. cheetah)

jeez...now that i think about it...what a freakin' year! happy new year everyone.

Recorded some more demos for another band that is no longer togethor....
Recorded an EP for a band that never came out and is no longer togethor...
Recorded even more demos for another band that is no longer togethor....
Played bass in a band that is no longer togethor....

I think I see a trend here...

What did you work with the Dresden Dolls regarding? Their new CD? Or on the NIN tour?

I worked with Amanda once or twice before they "got big". I've got some amazing live recordings (16 Track from the board) from a show in Boston of her Solo. Amanda and Brian really are great people.

Wow... it's a question that made me think quite a bit. Lets see.

Beginning of the year
) Found out that my business partner at the studio I was with had done something horribly wrong and immoral IMHO to me behind my back. Quit working with the studio
) Played a show in NYC at the Knitting Factory on the 1st of the year.
) Stopped playing with that band and sold my IEM system.
) Took some "Time off" from Berklee to go work for some convoluted reason.
) Worked at Banjo Center for a while... lost money due to low wages and the fact that i'm a better engineer who won't sell people crap even if they want it than a slick salesman.
) Bought a DL-4, and PSA-1. Upgraded to a Digi002R from Digi001.
) Lost more money by working at a Legal Staffing place hiring and finding lawyers. Low wages in Boston will kill you.
) Got a job at a bank. Uncreative, but stable.
) Played bass for a country band. Only paying gigs all year.
) Machinedrum broke- still pending repair.
) Moved to new apartment. Four months downpayment (Boston standard) left me broke and needing to sell gear.
) SM58 broke when apartment above leaked from the bathroom.
) Sold DL-4 in trade for MF-101
) Worked on three student films of varying degrees of quality doing sound work.
) Attemped to, but was unable to make any money musically in the Boston area. No one really hiring in the area for anything except Interns.

She took a day off the NIN tour to appear on Hierosonic's new record. She is AMAZING as a person, a musician, and performer. This was over the summer.

I got engaged to the most wonderful girl in the World, nothing can beat that. On a music related note I'm most of way through converting the other half of the barn the studio resides in into a drum room, 2 booths, lounge, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. It's not quite finished yet but the structure is there. It's going to be our home when we get married and also means the studio will be fully residential.

Oh yeah and I've got most of the garden done around the studio, fenced off a lake on the farm ready for stocking with fish, bound to find some musicians who like fishing. I also started cutting footpaths into a 4 acre oak wood on my farm, it's fenced off form livestock under an environmental scheme and will be perfect for finding a glade to be inspired for that next profound lyric!

It's been a hard year where I've been broke and spent the last 10 months sleeping on a matress on the live room floor but man is it gonna be good once it's done. 2005 has been amazing, looking forward to moving onwards and upwards in 2006.

This has been both one of the best and one of the worst career wise at the same time.

1. Got an opportunity to tour for 4 months, playing with my favorite band.
2. Played in front of the best crowds of my life, in some amazing venues.
3. Went to Japan to play 3 shows.
4. Due to not making any money touring (didn't find out till the end), came home and had to sell every single piece of studio gear that I had (U-87, MP-2RV, PT Mix+, 30th Anniversary Marshall Head, Distressor, etc., etc.)
5. Started making the most money I ever made in the studio for 3 months solid.
6. Got fired for unknown reasons only to find out the hidden agenda a month later
7. Hired as engineer for pre-production on my first Major Label project.
8. Started playing with that band.
9. Tour with that band got cancelled till new album is done. Tracking starts in March
10. Will be in the studio for that.
11. Had a "audition" in studio as the "guitar-guru" type of guy in charge of all the guitar oriented stuf (sounds, setups, etc.)
12. Didn't get it because I didn't have any amps they could use, and what I had I couldn't keep there.

All in all, it's been a strange year. 2006 will be amazing heh

I sold most of my recording equipment.

I did keep my awesome guitar set up however. And I have the P-Bass and the Ampeg. Concentrating on what I do best.

I'm playing more than ever. Maybe I will get discovered and lay down some tracks at your awesome studio. heh

Buried my mother, and we gave birth to a son (#5 for us). Musically speaking it wasn't much to write home about, honestly teaching my kids how to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on a Yamaha digital piano I bought them has been about the most rewarding experience with music to date.

Ethan, brilliant. Most enjoyable thing I have heard in many a moon.

Warhead, cute kid. Sorry to hear about your mom.

2005 - Solved a database problem for a company that had plagued them for 2 years.

Sold the largest software deal I have ever worked on, $21,000,000.

Bought my first Neve preamp.
Bought my AT 4033 and 4050 mics
Got my Event Precision 8 monitors
Got my bass traps, sorry Ethan had to go the cheap route.

Also. Tented the house for termites, replaced about $5000 in wood. Painted the house inside and out.

Busy year, looking forward to slowing things down and making some music this year.
