Line level inputs vs. XLR inputs in summing

This is in another thread and I will admit this is something I should know but DON'T. So, please just deal with the fact that this is a noob question coming from an experienced engineer. HAHA.

I have gotten my hands on a little console I am using for summing some mixes. There are no line inputs on the channels just XLR inputs. I am running my mixes out of my LUCID 8824 into this at +4. Is this possible? So far I am just getting distortion, which Ido understand I am amplifying a signal that doesn't need to be amplified. Help. Please. IS it possible?

It's an old yamaha m512 console. 12 channels. Nothing great but I have used the two outs for pres and they sound really dark. I use them on drums all the time. let me see if I can find a picture for you.

I had a friend use this console for me a while back and I liked the sound. I posted some comments before on GS about it. I have never been able to find out much about it. This is the first time I have used it by myself and I'm doing something wrong. Then again it was in my friends studio for years that is very nice. He is out for a while so I can't really call him up about it till like 6 months. Help

You can set the input gains to line level, -10 or +4
