Planar Magnetic Transducer

Has anyone ever heard of a Planar Magnetic Transducer? I found one here at work and can't exactly figure out what it does. It's basically a thin ribbon with two metal stripes (aluminum or mylar, I think) suspended between two rows of magnets. It has solder tabs on both ends. I know it's some sort of loudspeaker component, but is it actually a loudspeaker, or some kind of impedance stabilizer? I can't seem to find much information online.
