In no particular order because there isn`t one pre that does it all and I have not had the pleasure of hearing every pre thats ever existed but these are the ones I really love from what I have used or heard....
Avalon 737: I agree with etrella that its overpriced, but the pre does the job for most apps, its built like a tank, the EQ rocks and the DI is great on bass.
Martech MSS-10: probably the most open sounding pre I have ever heard on vocals and guitars
A Designs Pacifica: just has that smoothy silky sound to it... ahhh... most likely a 2010 purchase!!!
Manley Voxbox: warm, round, "in yer face" but not harsh, also overpriced.
Grace 101: the best pre in the $550 range, surprisingly open sound and balanced, especially on baritone vocals and acoustic guitar
1.TAB/Telefunken V376 (including a photo of the 4 of them...)
These are my pre's but I've also worked in a friends studio and he has another great set of pres...so...
9. Vintage design DMP
10. Vintage design DMP
The V376 is an amazing pre, really punchy and full. Love it on drums and DI bass, also great on vocals and just about any other source...
BAE's...kick and snare...what to say :-)
Auditronics really cool on some sources, nice on overheads...great sounding EQ...
If you feel the 737 is overpriced and overrated, then why put it in your 'top 5'? That makes no sense at all. While not my absolute favourite, I think it's a stellar piece of kit worth every cent.
I suggest that most (but not all) will post their 'fantasy list', rather than gear they have hard experience with, but never admit it. The few bits they own will always take out #1 spot, lusted gear will come soon after.
