With ribbon and tube mics, I like the Grace m-201. I am amazed what can be pulled out of a M/S setup with this pre. I was shopping arround to buy a UAD-2 Duo and ended up getting the LA-610 MkII with the free UAD-2 Duo promotional deal. The 610 has found limited application so far but I'm loving it for electric guitar and adding color to vocals. I know it's low-fi, but I've gotten excellent results using the Focusrite TwinTrak on drum overheads on a Glen Johns setup. The compressor is fiddly, but I like what it does with cymbals and the attack of toms and snare. I got to use a friend's Fearn tube pre and had to throw my undies away afterwards. This puppy is WAYYY up on the want list.

The Martech MSS-10 is probably the best preamp for vocals or acoustic instruments I've ever heard. However, it is quite expensive for a single channel preamp.

Mine are rather budget but here goes :-

UA Solo 610
Presonus Eureka
Focusrite ISA One

I would have also added the GAP PRE73 and M-Audio DMP3 to this list if they wasn't so fussy with mics.

Neve 1073. #1 fave (vox, acoustic guitars, overheads)
Focusrite Red6(fab on snare)
Neve 1272 (anything really loud)
Focusrite 428 (toms, percussion)
Focusrite 220 (kick, e.gtr, bass, vox)
Avalon 737sp (BVox)
Drawmer 1960 (bass, direct e.gtr)
Art v.chan (really good on low output bass and some ribbons, surprisingly)

I have others but these stand out in particular.

1- Focusrite ISA 110 (my goto preamp)
2- Martech MSS-10 (said a couple of times, awesome on vocals)
3- Apogee Mini-Me/Mini-MP (really good allrounder, underrated pre)
4- GA Pre-73 (this high because of price/quality ratio)
5- Cadac G-Series console pre
6- Aphex 1100
7- 1073 (like it a lot, but often end up finding something better)
8- SSL 9K console pre
9- Manley Voxbox (not really versatile, but can be killer)
10- whatever else is at hand I guess

Ok, lately in the LAB my favs are:

1. Seventh Circle N72's with major modifications. (has had the input and output carnhill transformers changed with old vintage stock marinairs out of an old NEVE channel strip and the transistor circuit changed with Jan Phillips NOS 2n3055. This is sent directly to an ANT w696b eq then to the DAW

2. BAE 1084 - can sort of use this for anything, but does not sound as warm or airy as above

3. Neve 3104 and 3115 followed by 1272 - good for drums

4. waiting on my GTQC, which may top the list after arrival

i like the 1081s on bass and kick. the isa-110s don't have the low end but they still sound great on bass DI. kind of funny. with isa-110s and 1081s i'm good. the 1084s are cool too. the 9098s are pristine sounding like the isa-110s the rest of the gear just sounds old. The VT737SP matches really great with a lot of vocal mics. especially the U87. a truly special pre.

Just some thoughts...

Siemens V72/76 (very musical vintage sounding, big low end, nice top, sounds good when driving input)

Chandler Ltd-1 (nice bottom, sounds good when driving input, really nice on almost everything any time)

API 512c (kind of bullet proof preamp, when we run out of preamps, these are the once to put in Nothing really special about it though I think

Vintech x73 (much like the chandler, good on drums, there is some certain vibe in these)

SSL 4000E w Jensen (Our console, get used sometimes, as the API, a decent preamp to throw in)

Neve 1073 (Really nice on piano, brings out a very varm vibe in many situations, sounds wonderful when driving)

Mindprint DTC (actually very useful and can create some cool stuff, dont hear much about it though)

...these work pretty well for rock/pop music anyway!

Electrodyne 712L solid state, great eq too!

API style pres with different combonations of transformers, opamps etc..

Auditronics 110 console. I don't track through it but mix everything through it and love the eq's and the transformer ins and outs. The board just sounds big and warm and wonderful!

Also have Electrodyne 711L modules just racked and didn't get all of the bugs worked out of them yet. I'm sure they will sound great though!
cool preamps

I think a lot of people on here would be struggling to have used more than 10 different preamp types. Here are some preamps I have used that I really like for their different flavours, and in no particular order.
1) Neve 1064
2) Amek 9098
3) Valley People Trans-amp
4) Ward Beck M470
5) Spectra Sonics 110

Does anyone rate the LaChapell 992?

I just did a session where we had APIs and Telefunkens and a few things and I thought the LaChapell rocked

no one's mentioned it though, so maybe it's just me
