Difference between La-610 &f Culture vulture?

Hi,

I am searching for a good micpreamp for making my sound better. Been thinking about two options : universal audio la-610 and the culture vulture.
I know both are tubes.

Which of these two is the most versatile in use?
What would you choose?

The Culture Vulture is not a mic preamp. It has a instrument input, but it is not a mic amp. It is a Valve distortion box that is designed to make Tubes operate incorrectly.

Thanks for the reply. Which of these two (culture vulture or la-610) are best to fatten up your mix or instruments?

Are you planning on using a microphone with this mic preamp that you'd like to purchase?

Because if so, you're going to have to scratch the Culture Vulture.

it's not a mic pre - it's an effect box

Think of the culture vulture as an effects box, specifically a stereo distortion effect box - it's not a mic pre - it's really not a DI either as it takes line level inputs as for as I know and not Instrument level inputs (but maybe I'm wrong on that).

I don't use mine as a DI so I'm not sure.

Generally you'd use it either in the chain after the mic pre, before the AD converter - or you'd use it in some manner of outboard hardware effect.

it's AWESOME but not for the faint of heart.

here's what the manual says:

Quote:
Inputs & Outputs

Inputs and outputs are unbalanced stereo jacks on the rear
panel.

There are two output sockets per channel. ‘Hi’ is standard line
level (+4dBV). ‘Lo’ is 20dB below this and can be used to drive
an amplifier. Both outputs can be used together. NB. When in
‘bypass’, the ‘Lo’ output will be 20dB below the input level.

There are also input jacks on the front panel for ‘D.I.’ use.
These cut out the signals from the input jacks on the rear when
a jack plug is inserted.

I'm happy with my LA610. No complaints.
